Hi All,

I'm about to move homes and new place is new construction and DSL and FIOS are not available yet. I am thinking about going down the satellite internet road but was wondering if the latency issue that is a inherent to satellite internet is a problem for VATSIM flying. Anyone out there with any experience on this or have recommendations you wish to share? Thanks.

Satellite is absolutely awful ....expensive and slow. And they cap your data. When you go over they either cut you off or throttle you way back. But, if you have no choice ...

Rick, considering the FSD protocol VATSIM uses was designed for internet connections of dial-up or worse... You'll be fine.

I stole my trashey connection from the soviets. By that i mean my ISP at the momment is crapping out. for the past 4 months our internet speed has been less than 1.0 mbps. often its droped to 0.07down or lower. im think its time for another ISP. but when i was on VATSIM i still could fly no problem. saw everybody i needed to see.

The problem with satellite is not so much the speed, but the ping, I'm currently using satellite internet and had to give up controlling because the 600-1000ms ping is just too much

The latency inherent in satellite internet is terrible ...VoIP, VPN, gaming, etc. suffer
