I was having a lot of framerate troubles with FSX with my new i7 3770k system. Turns out the processor was overheating and the turbo booster function of the processor was actually lowering the clock speed to 1200 mhz. I was using the stock i7 cooler, which isn't sufficient to keep the proc cool. I replaced the stock cooler with a Corsair H55 and this cooling system rocks! I cranked all sliders right in FSX and I was easily maintaining 20 - 30 fps in VC; in 2D cockpit the FPS was in excess of 70. While maintaining these awesome frame rates, the processor cores stayed well below 50 degrees C. Before the water cooler I was running at about 100 degrees, which is right at the max temp for the i7.

Just curious what video card your running on that system? I too am running a liquid cooler (H60) but overclocking my 2700k to 4.8Ghz. Corsair has a very cool product (no pun intended).

There is no max temp, it's what you're comfortable with. First, get the Intel cpu warranty for overclockers. For 20 bucks you can't go wrong. And if you do you're covered. But to answer your question? Wow, 50c is pretty good and most of us would love to have that chip. Good for you!!

My graphics card is an EVGA GTX 650 TI. It stays fairly cool around 47 degrees under load. Another tidbit of information is that my room temperature is about 67-68 degrees. It's a bit cool, but considering I live in a cold climate and it's winter, it doesn't bother me.
Also, I don't overclock any system components. I used to do that, but as you know that becomes a hobby by itself.
@Bill - there is a maximum operating temperature for any electronic device or component which is when it becomes a fire hazard. You can certainly push the envelope from the manufacturer's design specification, but you are risking a meltdown. From my personal experience I would recommend not being anywhere near 100 degrees C. That seems to be when Turbo Boost goes in the opposite direction and slows down your CPU to reduce temp.

http://hothardware.com/News/Gigabyte-Motherboard-Helps-Set-World-CPU-Clockspeed-Record-for-Ivy-Bridge/ mmmmmm.........
Have got the H100 cooler and had my I3770 to 4.8ghz with no effort, was heading to a stable 5.0ghz before mobo problems reared their ugly head. Temps maxing out at 70ish during initial stress tests.
Daniel - that does seem a bit on the low side FPS wise, at the end of the day you are happy, but if you want to investigate further just ask.

Rob yeah I know I remember you saying that I needed to tweak to get more fps and I eventually went and kostas tweaks and I think they did help but this was around the time I got a heap of new addons i may not be helping myself by using his settings which could be bringing me down I'll need to look into it further it seems but I always say is at least it doesn't crash when I see another plane on vatsim

That did sound kind of flippant. What I meant was that the MB usually has the facility to shut down the system if the temps get too hot--usually in the 100C range--and up until that point it is what you're comfortable with. Personally, I wouldn't go over 80C for even short periods and over 70C for an extended period. I have an H100 and run a 2700k at 4.8 Ghz with temp in the low 70's using Prime95 and 50ish running FSX. Corsair has a new cooler, the H100i, but I've heard mixed reviews. It seems to work fine but there are issues with noise and rattling fans so I'm pretty sure this is something they can work out pretty quick.
