Hey guys!
I need some help overclocking my i5-2500k. I've posted in the overclockers forums but there hasn't been any reply yet. I followed this guide: http://www.techreaction.net/2011/01/04/3-step-overclocking-guide-%E2%80%93-sandy-bridge-v0-1beta/2/ At first I wasn't able to get anything over 4.4 without the blue screen during start up and tests.
My Specs are:
Asus P8P67-M PRO REV 3.0
intel i5-2500k Stock Cooler
8GB DDR3 1333 RAM
These are my BIOS settings:
Bclk 100
RAM Freq 1333
Timings 9-9-9-24-1T
DRAM (V) 1.5
Additional Turbo Voltage: .012
CPU Offset (V) + .0010
Max VCore (V) 1.392
I am running LinX, RealTemp, and CPU-Z. Which brings up another one of my questions, my cpu temps ALWAYS hit the TJ Max temps, no matter what settings I use. At first it was 98c and then I turned it down to 85c so it wouldn't go over that. My goal is to get a stable 4.5 clock speed. I know a lot of you are just going to point me to another link (that I most likely have already come across) but if you could advise on what settings to change or how I can accomplish 4.5 with this setup, that would be great! I know it is do-able, as others have passed 4.5 by quite a bit with my same set up. No matter what I do, I can't get 4.5 to pass! Getting desperate for help!
Thanks!

Out of interest what type of cooling are you running on the CPU?

Right now I am using the stock fan, but I purchased this one today: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065 I got thinking, maybe it's the temps getting too high that is causing the BSOD. It didn't matter what the VCore was at, it always crashed. I set everything back to stock and going to wait for the cooler to get here before continuing. Although, I would still like those of you who have overclocked to chime in, so by the time it arrives, I can start!

I'm starting to think so too.

Problem with that is even at stock settings and running a torture test, it jumps up to 85c (my max allowable settings). I'm starting to believe it's a cooling issue. I tried voltage from 1.29 - 1.40 and it all crashed. I know most people running at 4.5 are in the 1.35 - 1.38 range.

You won't be able to hit 4.5 on a stock heatsink. The Hyper 212 EVO got me to a stable 4.5 with temps no higher that 69 during P95, and 75 on IBT. With SB though, you should be able to push a little higher with the better cooler, but until then I would go back to stock settings.

Kyle - What is the BSOD you are getting? If it's not on the screen long enough to decipher get BlueScreenView - its a freebie. It does, as most have said, sound like a cooling issue but there could be something else contributing

It's the 0x124 code, which has to do with voltage. I'm pretty sure it's heat because it will crash anywhere from 1.28 - 1.40v. And of course, the volts vary an the CPU throttles itself way back before it crashes due to heat. It'll jump to its max temp settings almost immediately after prime95 starts.

Hi Kyle - not necessarily VC - Have a read of this http://www.overclock.net/t/1120291/solving-fixing-bsod-124-on-sandybridge-read-op-first - I would also recommend this website in general on OC'ing - it helped me get my i7 stable a 5.0ghz. Have you got/installed the new cooler yet? There are a number of good tuts on OC'ing on overclock.net

Hmm interesting... the BSOD code list states its too much or too little vcore. Thanks for that article! I haven't yet, still waiting for it to arrive. I have been using that site/forum for help. I'm hoping to get it here today and get it installed and OC Sunday.

Got the new cooler installed, looks to help keep the temps low! But still getting the BSOD. Although the latest one is the 0x101 code. Followed this guide since it's the same board as mine and CPU: http://www.overclock.net/t/916621/asus-p8p67-m-pro-ocing-guide I'm at 0.034 on the Additional Turbo Volts and thinking that is too low as I see others are around the .100 mark.
Any thoughts? Oh, and I also followed the advice on the link you posted Alan.
UPDATE: I changed the offset from +0.005 to +0.010 and the ATV to .072. It runs much longer before BSOD 124. The good news is my temps have not gone above 57c.

What voltage is CPUz showing under load? With the 3570k I have the offset set to +0.115 and I get 1.208v under load @4.5ghz. Since you are using Sandy bridge you will need higher voltage to attain 4.5 stable (though the offset may be lower). Just keep upping the voltage until you can get it stable overnight in Prime95.

Right now these are the settings and results:
Offset +0.010
ATV 0.112
CPU-Z:
vCore MAX 1.336
vCore AVG 1.320
RealTemp:
Temp MAX: 59c
Made it 30 minutes until it BSOD... so far the best results I've got and I hope I'm finally onto something..
Here are the last few results and patterns to them:
Offset +0.010
ATV 0.092
vCore MAX 1.336
vCore AVG 1.320
BSOD: 7 minutes
---------------
Offset +0.010
ATV 0.100
vCore MAX 1.336
vCore AVG 1.320
BSOD: 5 minutes
---------------
Offset +0.010
ATV 0.112
vCore MAX 1.336
vCore AVG 1.320
BSOD: 30 minutes
--------------
Offset +0.010
ATV 0.120
vCore MAX 1.336
vCore AVG 1.320
BSOD: 33 minutes
UPDATE: Well I think I finally got it!! After a torture test for 7 hours, no BSOD, temps maxed at 64c and it had 0 errors! I used these settings with success:
Offset +0.010
ATV 0.156
vCore MAX 1.360
vCore AVG 1.344
Temp MAX 64c
