I have a Intel i7 980X processor (3.33 overclocked running at very stable at 4.5GHz) with 12GB RAM and a Nvidia GTX 670 overclocked card. One 24" monitor, one 17" monitor. FSInn, ServeInfo, ACARS, FSCommander all run on a 2nd PC via WideFS. Only thing running on main PC is FSX (w/ Acceleration pack)
I use a product by Leonardo Software House called FlyTheMaddog Pro 2010, an incredibly realistic MD88 experience.
I have FSX graphics options set pretty conservatively, and I am getting about 40-44 FPS. If I open an exterior view, say top down for a better view of my taxing, it drops down to around 27-30 FPS.
Are these good values, you think? Should I expect higher values based on my hardware? I can't really see any performance issues until I get down below 24 FPS, and then things get slow, and the images appear to get jumpy. If I drop below 18 FPS, I almost always am rewarded with a BSOD.
So do these numbers sound okay, or are there changes I can make to get them higher?
Thanks,
Todd

I have my external frame rate limiter set to 30.

27-30 FPS is generally considered pretty good for any system.

Thanks, Michael. I used this site to help get me to the FPS I experience now (42 in the 2D Cockpit), and it was a HUGE help. I tried the external frame rate limiter they recommend there, but was only seeing a max of 38 FPS. I was using the D3D9 dll. I'm guessing it was the right one.
I wonder, am I expecting too much. Perhaps a max of 30 FPS is more than enough, and I am simply stuck trying to get higher numbers for no other reason than that they exist.
It worries me, however, to see such a loss of FPS when I open another window and undock it (ie exterior view).

Ah, thanks, Bill. This is good to know. I had this fear in the back of my head that everyone else was running smoothly at 60 FPS or something, and here I was sitting with an average of 30 like some sort of schmuck! Thanks, I feel better now with my 40, but wish I didn't get the drop with opening an outside view.

The FPS will change depending on what view you're in and what scenery you're in and what aircraft you're flying. The important thing is that it's smooth. I drop to under 20FPS sometimes but it's smooth so I don't notice it. Don't get in the trap of always checking your FPS, I did for the longest time but haven't looked at my counter in ages. As long as it's smooth go for it!

Plenty of debate out there about where exactly the human eye no longer perceives a difference in the fps ... I believe the general consensus is at around 60fps. Still, I'm plenty happy when I can get 30fps and that is where I set my external limiter ... 60fps is a pipe dream to me atm.
