I please beg for mercy!
Ive dedicated over 40 hrs to configuring FSX on a new system........Still cant get it to fly correctly. It is being sooo frustrating!!!!!
I please need help with Overclocking stability and FSX.
My status as of today: (From complex to basic).
- My OC seems to be unstable. When I enter the BIOS, the DRAM freq. is set correctly, but in CPUID I only get 800 mhrz (Instead of the 1600 that the memory is capable of). My memory is Kingston HyperX DDRAM3 to 1600Mhz. (16GB)
- So far, Ive managed not to have any blue screens for the past 14 hrs (straight, flying or kinda flyng, testing).
- I have an intel i3770K proccessor with an Asus P8Z77 VLK motherboard, currently OC to 4.4Ghz. I had it to 4.5 but I think i was doing something wrong because it was very unstable. Its a brand new equip!.
- When launching FSX, the core speed drops to 1.6, 3.6, 2.9, 3.1, 3.0, 2.7.....etc. never stable at 4.4...THUS, FSX looks kinda like FS2002. I have settings at around 40% and flying NGX Im getting no more than 12 F/s on ground, 20f/s on the air. (Again, if I get to follow through a descent 1 hr flying time before FSX closes due to a "Problem". (Fatal error)
- Im using Nvidia GTX680 @2GB memory, with nvidia inspector.
- FSX CFG modified according to Michael Greenblats settings (RIP) and Avsim settings.
- FSX closes due to fatal errors, Ive worked and identified the following faults:
- uiautomationcore.dll. (Ive managed to put the 6.0 version in FSX root and the 7.0 version in Windows 7. (BTW Im running Win 7 Proffesional 64bit.) This caused me around 10 CTD before I configured it as im mentioning, so Im guessing it might have been resolved. (please, I hope).
Thats pretty much it....
What I have done:
- FS installed in a SS hard drive.
- Turned DEP off (always) Through the cmd module)
- Turned User Account Controlls all the way to off.
- Running FSX as Admon, and using Windows XP compatibility mode checked.
- Windows 7 to basic settings.
- Running High performance power settings.
My installed add ons: (In this order of instalation)
-FSX, SP1 and SP2 (no acceleration)
- FSGenesis Mesh and Land Class
- Scenery tech landclass
- UTX NA, Europe and TAC
- REX + Overdrive
- GEX NA, Europe, etc (the latest version)
- PMDG NGX
- FSDREAMTEAM KLAX
Help Please!!!! Im of course willing to pay for the service and assistance if neccesary....
Thanks!!

The RAM is running at the correct speeds, CPUZ reports half of the actual speed (I forget the reason). Can you provide some more info on the OC? What voltage are you running at? What kinds of temps are you getting during your stress testing (preferably P95)? What kind of cooling solution are you using? It doesn't appear that the CTD would be related to the OC, but it does sound like the CPU is being throttled. Just to confirm, run P95 for at least 8 hours and make sure there are no BSODs or errors in P95 (i.e. the workers stopping). I know the uiautomationcore.dll thing is a relatively common issue for W7 users but I have yet to experience the problem myself so I don't have any info that Google couldn't provide. Perhaps someone else could give you a hand with that.

Forget overclocking ... I too have a i7-3770, 16GB RAM, and a Nvidia 660 .... my FSX runs beautifully on default BIOS settings with sliders maxed and all sorts of addons and scenery.
Problem solved.

Voltage CPU: 1.320 and DRAM 1.550.
During stress Tests Im getting high 90s and 100sC.
I use CoolIT SYSTEMS ECO-R120 Advanced Liquid Cooling (ALC).
Michael, Jay, I tried running FS with no Overclock. My CPU works at 4.1 GHZ? (Really? Its supposed to be a 3.5GHz). And flying from FSDreamTeam KATL 2012, Using FSINN, PMDG NGX, at the gate, I get max 10-12 f/s. Sounds normal? My sliders I would say are at mid, no DirectX, no Antialiasing selected.
I appreciate your help. FS is just too much of importance to me...

If you're CPU is at 4.1 GHz now and you're only getting 10-12 fps then another 0.4 Ghz or so isn't going to help you.

Your voltage and temps are way too high. For voltage you don't want to go above 1.3 and temps should never go above 85. Lower your voltage to ~1.2 and up it until you get a stable OC. The reason you aren't getting very good performance is the excessive voltage is causing too much heat and making your CPU throttle itself.
On a side note; If possible I would strongly recommend you replace that cooler as soon as you can. I took a look at some of the reviews on Newegg and the majority of them are saying they are leaking after ~1 year of use. When looking for a replacement something like a Hyper 212 would actually give you better cooling performance than a closed loop with a 120mm rad. If you still want liquid cooling I would go with something with a 240-280mm rad such as the H100i, H110, or H220.

On a side note, have you tried some of the FSX tuning settings, like here: http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html
I had FSX performance issues on my reinstall after Christmas but a bit of tuning work and I'm better than ever!
Cheers!

Why do you have XP Compatibility Mode checked? I don't know much about it, but maybe because it's checked it's limiting FSX to 2GB memory?

During the uiautomatorcore.dll fails, one of the causes (I read) was this, so I tried ticking it....
My coolersystem is definately over 1 year old. Il start as well with replacing it and trying a new one, modifying the voltage.
I started at 1.275 but i got a blue screen and on the ivy bridge overclocking guide, the error pointed to increasing vcore....
Ill try with the list luke, thanks...
BTW, any one knows of anyone that can perhaps give me a logmein session to help me stable this thing? I dont know if you knew Michael Greenblat? Unfotunately he passed away last year, but he offered this service on FS-GS.com.
Again, many thanks, Ill try this suggestions...

If you can't get it stable at less than 1.3v then you would need to shoot for a lower OC. Unfortunately not all chips can achieve higher overclocks. You may have some luck with different lower voltages (sometimes a chip may not be stable even with higher voltages, but would be stable on a lower voltage). Where did you start with the voltage for the OC? I typically start with a offset of -.05 and increase from there until it is P95 stable. You may have some luck at 4.4-4.5 with this method, but you may end up needing to drop to something lower.

I know it isn't as cool, but Asus motherboards ship with AI Suite II. This actually does a great job at overclocking and it checks for instability. If you want to overclock, it is a safe bet.

Ok, thanks.
I tried the venetubo page, worked ok. Got it to 25fps on VC.. stable., I just have to mke a flight to test it...
If it works, will try later with low voltage and OC
Thanks!

Just a couple more questions:
Does any of you use REX for weather updates? Does it generate some kind of conflict with FSX?_ Ive been using mine and it appears sometimes during the updates, I have had FSX frozen and not responding anymore, forcing me to restart the flight. REX is the only other software I use in the same PC as FSX. Everything else is in the network PC, But I think REX needs to be on the same computer, right?
And the other question, Im getting flashing (apearing and disappearing) PAPI lights on approach. Anyone knows what can be happening?
As always greatly appreciated!
Cheers°

For what it's worth - I had many of the same symptoms you are having, and then, per some advice I got from a colleague and work, I disabled the extra HDMI audio device on my video card (in device manager) and suddenly my system began to behave.
I can't answer why it worked, but maybe it's worth trying ...

You kind of have to go out of your way to do a BIOS update, so if you aren't sure you probably haven't. Consult your motherboard manual on the best way to update.
BTW, did you ever get a stable overclock with temps of <85C and <1.3v? I still think thermal throttling was your original problem.

Robbie, I really just followed Michael s advice and went with the normal CPU run. OC is just too much of a headache! Besides, I'm no pro on this subject....
Though I did enter the BIOS and chose the automatic performance option for ASUS and its giving me up to 4.2 GHz, with no additional tweaks, everything else is taken care by the system...dunno if its enough, but its working....
....
Im do finding REX and automated weather updates to be a pain on FSX, causing it to freeze or close, or loose control of the aircraft during flight...anyone experiencing similar problems?

I only use REX for textures so I'm not sure about the performance of their weather engine, but the loss of control thing used to happen all the time with Activesky in DWC mode on certain aircraft (specifically the NGX). It could be a similar problem for you.

What do you use for weather updates? Since FSINN has an issue with warm weather above FL180 that doesn't allow the NGX to climb?
Does the in-built weather update accurately depicts real weather? I too use REX for textures and then shutting it down is resulting in a much more stable OS.

Gents, a question.
I'm getting pretty descent frames when using DX10 to fly, and the overall experience is amazing, but most sceneries apart from FSDT CYUL, KJFK, KLAX, dont work at night with DX10.
I tried deactivating it, but I got a huge performance impact. It dropped noticeably.
Any suggestions as of why?
I'm a little lost here...
Thanks!

Isidoro, try looking into a program called OpusFSX. It is the best weather engine I have ever used for flight sim and has none of the problems the REX or AS engines have.
Also, as to your original problem, your CPU was running too much voltage causing an overheat and a throttle of the CPU speeds. You are very lucky not to have damaged the CPU, anything over 4 GHZ on that CPU should run FSX just fine. Corsair H100i is the cooling solution I normally recommend if you have a case that will accommodate it. With proper cooling you may find you can overclock much higher, even into the 5ghz range if you really push it.

Hi Everyone.
I saw the program FSX Booster on simmarket. Would this be the same tweeking as the venetubo.com service? Has anyone used it? Just checking additional options.
Thankyou so much for your support. This and disabling the sceneries I will not use for that particular flight, has made FSX pretty stable...
Cheers

FSX Booster just uses various tweeks that are publicly available. Between venetubo and Avsim setup guide you'd have it all covered.

Isidoro. FSX Booster is a great software, but once you installed you will always have to use it, or your files will be corrupted: follow frooglesim about FSX Booster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovSnyxlus3s&feature=c4-overview&list=UUCcyPyTfN8LEVHQojHkR-aA
Now, if you really want get down serious on tweaking... I had follow this video and I got a great performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU6VJy8t0ao&feature=c4-overview&list=UUkuZJXLUchGMTCbTLFQemSQ (try this one and let me know).
See ya.

UPDATE: Just tested FSX and now I am immediately getting the following ERROR which is different to the Fatal Error I was getting. It seems like more and more this is pointing to a complete reinstall. I hope I am wrong.
Here is the error message "Flight Simulator was unable to load some program files and will now exit. Please reinstall Flight Simulator to restore or repair the program installation"

I just spent a month building a rig from scratch using NickN's guides and some service from PMDG:
1) There is absolutely NO way you are ever going to get 5.0GHz without delidding/lapping the CPU and using a very high end custom cooling solution AND being lucky enough to get a chip in the top 10% of the quality range.
2) Absolutely NEVER use the program FSXBooster.
3) Opus is very good ... I use REX and have no problems ... I also own Opus and ActiveSky2012
4) As for the 737NGX not climbing I too had the problem with TAT above 30C ... I disabled all weather in FSInn and the problem went away ... 737NGX climbs perfectly now.
5) CyberPower PC ... I purchased one and immediately returned it. I had them OC it to 4.2 GHz and temps hit 95C 20 minutes into Prime95. Here are the caveats for CyberPowerPC:
a. The mobo they use by default is crap ... always upgrade it to a decent ASUS
b. The power supply they use by default is also a piece of crap ... upgrade it to at least a BRONZE or GOLD.
c. Request that they include no games ... even though they say the games are free you will find out they are not when you return the PC ($20.00 each upon return.
d. Do not request any special services like packaging or engraving ... if you get engraving you cannot make a return as the case was modded.
e. Special services like foam packaging are just that, services ... the cost of them will not be refunded.
f. Don't rely on the fact that you can return the PC ... my shipping for the return was over $100 using UPS Ground.
6) Make sure your memory has the proper voltage ... mine was 1.65 ... you said yours was 1.55 ... what memory are you using?
7) Computers from www.digitalstormonline.com are quite good and the warranty is better than CyberPowerPC.
8) Save your current FSX.CFG file ... by renaming it FSX.CFG.OLD and restart FSX ... a new and clean FSX.CFG will be created. Then follow NickN's instructions for tweaking FSX. Here is a copy of my FSX.CFG ... do not try and use it directly ... use it as a reference ((https://www.dropbox.com/s/du4gvz14uzvcc80/fsx.cfg)). Search for a site on the internet that allows you to compare two text files and highlight the difference ... do this with my FSX.CFG and your new one. Check out the differences and apply them one by one.
9) Here is NickN's guide to tuning FSX (http://www.simforums.com/forums/the-fsx-computer-system-the-bible-by-nickn_topic46211.html)
10) The Jesus Tweak is actually pretty good ... make sure you save a copy of your existing FSX.CFG file before you do this though.
11) This is a thread that documents my travels through Haswell overclocking ... I think you will find it an interesting read (http://forum.avsim.net/topic/416434-do-you-have-a-good-haswell-i7-4770k-how-to-tell/page-4#entry2800766).
12) It sounds as if you do not have a stellar chip ... check out the previous post (How to tell if you have a good chip) and you might find something out (I say MIGHT because I am unfamiliar with the 3770k) ... the logic should apply though ... interesting to see if it does.
13) Here is a step-by-step guide to overclocking Haswell ... it might apply to you as well (http://www.simforums.com/forums/haswell-48ghz-on-air-building-a-haswell-system_topic46180.html).
Have fun,
C. T.

PS: I'm getting pretty much 30fps everywhere with both the T7 and the 737NGX ... except for nasty airports like KFLL and KATL.
Here is a well kept secret for those using FSX in windowed mode with two monitors. Keep that mouse OFF of the VC is you are not actively making changes to the plane's controls. I get at least a 5 fps boost when following this little trick. It would appear that MSFX is performing some pretty complex math to try and figure out exactly where the mouse is in the VC ... if you don't need the mouse ... get it off the VC. I'm very interested to see if others get the same result.

Sorry to bring up a thread from the dead....lol, but Im thinking of upgrading my Graphics card to something a little more updated. It will be used with the same i3770k processor. Currently I have a GTX 660, but I see there are many new ones out there...Any suggestions for an upgrade? I don't know if the GTX 1060 works ok?? My budget is under 400
Im using P3d V3.3 currently with all the new stuff out there (AS16, PMDG, Scenery, etc...)
Thanks for you suggestions.

Thanks for digging this thread up! I was learning a lot reading it and I didn't even realize it was from 3 years ago.
As for your question, I run the GTX 970 and it's been great for me. I see it listed in a lot of credible simmers' specs...

Well I can't say from personal experience as I've never owned a GTX 1070, but I've heard a fair number of people comment on how the newer cards have surpassed the limitations of FSX/P3D as a 32-bit platform. In other words, the FSX/P3D software can't take advantage of all that extra power at this point in time. It will probably make a bigger difference when the newer sims come out, but as of right now I doubt you are getting $200-worth of extra performance as far as the flight simulators are concerned.
As I said, my GTX970 has been great for me.
