Hello everyone, I am currently looking to boost FPS in my FSX and wanted to get a little input on it first. Just so you know, I am extremely computer savvy and repair them in my spare time.
First of all, specs:
AMD 965 BE OC'd @3.8ghz
8GB ADATA Gaming series RAM
ATi 5770 HD GFX Card (Asus)
Full Tower, 9 case fans, 1000w PSU
Gigabyte Motherboard
Single Monitor@1080p
Now, I believe that the real hit to FPS in FSX with my rig is coming from that dated 5770 card. I also know that FSX is rather CPU intensive, which brings me to where I would like some input from someone with a bit of experience.
Can I expect a good boost in performance in FSX by switching to an Nvidia 760 or 770 video card? This PC is about four years old and it still runs perfect, 300 bucks or so on a new 760? What do you think? Worth it on my system or a waste with little or no gain?
Thanks for your replies!

I doubt you would see much of an improvement in FS by upgrading the GPU on that system. That said if you would still like to grab a new GPU the 760 would be my recommendation, and I'm a fan of EVGAs new ACX cooling for them.

Hmm, well it would have to be the processor slowing it down then I guess... But my card is running maxed out with FSX and only has 1GB of VRAM. I would be willing to bet there has got to be some increase in performance with a 4GB card that runs faster than that 5770.
Yes I want the 4GB card lol. I play other games as well and with some big titles coming out soon I suppose I should upgrade the card anyways. Thanks for the input, Nvidia it is!

For FSX the CPU would be causing the slow downs. VRam doesn't really matter much until you hit 3 displays in NVidia surround; unless you are seriously considering that don't pay the extra just for extra VRam. Even if you are it is unlikely it would help you at all unless you are running 1440 displays. For gaming the 760 is a great card; it is about 5% slower than the 670 I use which is great for the price. The 770 is also a good option for gaming but if it were me I would upgrade the CPU before I spent that much money on the GPU.

Well I'm stuck with the CPU until I build an entirely new rig, I'm not gonna fork out the cash for an FM2 motherboard and processor or the Intel equivalent at the moment. It actually seems to run pretty strong on the CPU side, I am still hoping a new GPU will help I guess lol.
I suppose even if it doesnt help FSX it will certainly help with some other titles. And I have heard of some games running a single monitor in 1080p that use near 3GB of VRAM, so it cant hurt.

A decent mobo and a great CPU for less than a 770 and only $50 more than a 4GB 760. A regular 760 will be fine for gaming though; while it won't hurt anything to have the extra VRam you really won't see a difference for the added price.

An i5 though? I kinda like to build higher end systems, with a good 5 year solid gaming life after which they are retired to the household as TV pc's or kept for when I do small LAN party stuff. When I built this system the i7's where just coming online and were really expensive so I went with this AMD chip. I know even the i5 is probably faster, but I would rather wait one more year or so and build something ready to go for another 5 years, definitely gonna build intel this time. The new GPU is gonna get me by for another year and then will probably go into my new rig for another year or so. The 760 isnt looking too bad at the moment...

For gaming and FS and i5 is all you really need; you really don't need the extra threads that come with an i7 and wouldn't see a performance increase from them outside of heavily threaded applications.

Im gonna just wait and buy an i7 4770K with a Gigabyte OC motherboard, probably after Christmas time. For now the 760 should get me up to par for some of the major releases coming out soon.
