Looking at a new processor/mobo and wonder if any of you have experience with the 2600k or 3770k...
Mobo will prolly be something along the lines of the Asus Maximus V Gene.
I can get a refurbished 2600k for a decent price and the 3770k for retail.
Ive also heard the Ivybridges dont handle OC as well as the Sandys.
Any input is good input!!

No need to go for an i7, the extra threads won't help at all for FS. On that note there isn't really any reason go for a ROG series mobo although if your case is smaller than a mid tower I could understand going with the Gene. For z77 I'm a big fan of the P8Z77-V LK on a budget (it's what I personally use, achieved 4.5 with a 3570k) or one of ASUS's sub $180 mobos if they have any extra features that you would like. As long as you're upgrading though you might as well go ahead and grab z87 and pair it with a 4670k; z87 includes a ton of new features as well as about a 5% bump in performance clock for clock over Ivy and the price gap between them isn't all that large.
Haswell can be hit or miss while overclocking though and I've only had one Ivy chip that wasn't able to hit 4.5 or higher (which was due to a manufacturing defect and RMAed) so it is a tough choice between the 2. There really isn't any reason to go with Sandy at this point; they were exceptional in their day but those crazy high overclocks weren't as common as you would think so it's not really worth it to cripple yourself with the lack of newer features than accompany Ivy and Haswell.

Is your 4.5 stable? Have you been able to get any higher? What kind of frames do you get around addon airports with the ngx?
I found a 4670k/z87 bundle at Tiger for 4 bills.. not bad in the grand scheme of things..

Yep, the 4.5 is stable @1.208v which is really good actually. During my p95 runs temps never broke 69C so I imagine I would be able to push it to 4.6 or 4.7 but I'm happy with it's current performance for the moment so I haven't bothered with it yet. On the ground at ATL with the NGX and add on scenery, Activesky and REX I get right around 30FPS in the VC, though it does dip to the mid 20s occasionally (mostly dependant on weather). For the most part in less complex aircraft I don't see it dip below 50 or so and the default aircraft typically run at over 100.
What is the mobo included in that bundle?

That sounds great.. have you tried anything in the 777 yet? I know the NGX is more of a hog when it comes to frames so I am optimistic..
ITs the ASUS Z87k mobo REviews on TD look pretty good but I havent look too deep yet.
If I go the 4670k/z87k way I may have to pick your brain for some baseline settings... if you dont mind.

I haven't had the money to pick up the 777 yet, but it's definitely something I'd like to try out.
The z87-k doesn't look bad, but if Tigerdirect is asking more than $350 for the pair they are overcharging.
There aren't really 'base settings' but the process isn't dissimilar Sandy/Ivy. If you want a good baseline you can start with ASUS's auto overclocking feature which has improved significantly from what I understand. From there you can tweak it and push it a little further. One word of advice with Haswell: don't use P95 for your stress test. The adaptive voltage will overvolt it like crazy if you try, I've been using the 'Intel Extreme Tuning Utility' for my Haswell builds, but I'm trying to find something a bit better.

Pick up a decent cooler and let ASUS do the OC for you and go from there. If it gives you a 4.4 or higher you could probably just leave it alone at that, otherwise it's pretty simple; set your multiplier and up the voltage (no more than 1.3v) until it's stable. Time consuming but not terribly difficult.
