Upon starting FSX I get a Fatal Error msg and then is shuts down. I have searched this problem all over the internet for the last 3 days to no avail. The fix I did try was uninstalling Acceleration, rebooted, ran FSX disc 1 to Repair, rebooted. Fired up the sim but still a Fatal Error. I have also ran a complete Defrag on all drives using the O&O defrag software. All drivers are current and BIOS is also current.
I would hate to do a complete unistall and reinstall of FSX due to the many add-ons I have, but at this point I am dead in the water. I know after looking at many threads online, there are quite a few recommended fixes but before I go chasing my tail, I figured I would come here to see if anyone has some fixes that have proven to be successful.

Try renaming your fsx.cfg file to something else then restart FSX. It will build a new default one. And messages along with the fatal error?

I forgot to mention I have had FSX rebuild fsx.cfg to no avail. Also, there is no message other than it saying "A fatal error occurred" and then shuts down. It doesn't give any error message along with the fatal error message. Wish I could give you more, but that's all it gives me

Tom, You might need the file: Uiautomationcore.dll under your FSX root. You may want to try by following this thread or any other thread: http://forums.flightsimlabs.com/index.php?/topic/3516-fsx-and-windows-7-in-64-bits-needs-uiautomationcoredll-to-stop-crashing/

Make sure your default flight isn't an aftermarket aircraft (ie. PMDG 737-800 NGX) and if using a quadrant or similar joystick with an axis be sure to raise your flaps to the 0 position before launching FSX.

Tom, delete your FSX.CFG complete. and fire up your FSX to create a new one. Run "CCleaner" also to clean your Registries before you run the fsx for a new FSX.CFG.

I'm sure there is an application log in the event viewer that will give you more information. Right click mycomputer > manage > Event Logs > Windows > applications, look for FSX crashes. Always a good place to head. Failing all else. If your system is FSX only rig, reformat/reinstall.

Jason, After spending a number of hours last night researching this issue, I noticed your 5th link is where I was last night. Uninstalling Acceleration (including SP1 & SP2), running the repair on FSX disc 1 and then reinstalling Acceleration.
I have deleted Acceleration, and verified SP1 & SP2 are also uninstalled. I am able to run the repair function successfully from Disc 1 of FSX. When I put the Acceleration disc in to reinstall it, it won't run automatically on the install, and when I open the files on the disc and select the "setup.exe" file to manually install it. it does nothing (running as administrator) I am at a loss here as to why I cannot reinstall Acceleration. Any suggestions?

I think you need to run FSX before you can install Acceleration as it sets some config files and registry entries. You might also want to run the registry tool just before the Acceleration install.

Here's an update. I notice when I click on FSX to start the simulator, the version of FSX is 10.0.61637.0. When I go to the control Panel I see "Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Acceleration" showing up in my programs with the same 10.0.61637.0 under version. So when i try to uninstall Acceleration I get the following message "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed"
Correct me if I am wrong, but this message indicate the Acceleration is not installed. Please let me what you guys think............

Tom, this is what is making your FSx not working:
simprop.dll
Try to find that file and cut and paste into any other folder or desktop and see what happens. What was the last thing you have installed for your FSX?

I'll try cut and pasting the simprop.dll onto the desktop again and try to launch it. The first time I did that yesterday ended with no joy, I'll post after testing it with this file deleted again.
The last thing I install was Flight Environment X. That was installed about 2 weeks ago, it had a good install and FSX worked for about 10-15 flights before FSX decided to crash. What is your opinion of the Acceleration showing up in the programs list but when I try to uninstall it, it says its not there, but when I start up FSX as administrator and look at the version of FSX that I am using it shows 10.0.61637.0 which is FSX Acceleration? Something doesn't sound right there.

Ok, Tom, if you have the FSX Acceleration, you don`t have to install the SP1 or SP2... Are you willing to start fresh ? uninstall everything and install again? Are you running as administrator? I have my UAC settings to be never notify me and that make things more open as of running the system as administrator.
But let me know if you want to start fresh.

Sorry for all your troubles, what a nightmare. I went through the reinstall a few months ago.
My suggestion would be to not install FSX in the default directory under program files (x86). I installed in a folder called FSX off the root of the drive. In my case that was D:\FSX\. This eases some of the security, UAC, and I believe CTD related issues down the road with FSX and other add on programs.
Before you re-install I'd also make sure 3rd party sim add ons are uninstalled, the old flight sim directory is completely deleted, and all registry entries referring to it are gone. If your Windows OS is on the trashy/bloated side with some bad DNA, now is also the time to rebuild Windows fresh from scratch also.

Tom, here's a couple of links for FSX installation. Get a notebook and keep a log of what you do. You'll thank yourself over and over again. And keep it up to date, even when you're making changes to the fsx.cfg. Knowing what you did and when can be a huge help. I was going to, and didn't, and have wished many times I did.

Jas, That is a great point about rebuilding Windows from scratch. If I do a rebuild from scratch, then I don't have to worry about deleting any fsx files because they will be gone will the new windows install. Correct????
OK, 2 questions...1) How do I do a windows install, Do I use the disc that I have from the original install? Never mind about the 2nd question, I have a 1 TB external drive I can put all of my 3rd party add-on's on.

You'll have to reinstall the addons so the registry gets updates. And you want to anyway so it's all clean.

Jas, That is a great point about rebuilding Windows from scratch. If I do a rebuild from scratch, then I don't have to worry about deleting any fsx files because they will be gone will the new windows install. Correct????
That's absolutely right when you rebuild from scratch. Rebuilding from scratch implies that at some point in the process you are ensuring that all data on the C: drive is nuked. This can be done one of a few different ways and it depends on your rebuild process. If you have a home built PC, then you are probably installing Windows yourself. So when you boot from the Windows CD, be sure to delete the old partition where Windows was once installed. After deleting the partition, create a new one or Windows will find the available drive and create it for you during the new Windows installation. On the other hand, if you purchased your PC through an outlet or if it came with a special factory rebuild CD or rebuild partition, follow the manufacturer's instructions to rebuild the PC. That typically involves booting from the factory rebuild CD or the special hidden rebuild partition. During this process your C: partition should be deleted and recreated automatically as part of the factory rebuild. Either way, the important thing is all old data is scrubbed from the drive ensuring you have a fresh and problem free starting point. If you rebuild your PC and find that you still recognize some old data files on your C: drive, that's a good sign your C: partition wasn't completely scrubbed.

OK, 2 questions...1) How do I do a windows install, Do I use the disc that I have from the original install?
I more or less answered that above.

Jas, Bill, Thiago,
Thank for all of the advice. I plan on doing a clean install of Windows 7 tomorrow or Thursday. After that is running smooth, I will install FSX. As I move through the many steps required, I am sure questions will pop up that I will not be sure of. I'll post any questions I have here, again thank you for all of the input you have given to me. I am sure this information will greatly help me as I move through this process. Cheers!! I will definite;ly be in touch

Ok...It is great that everyone in here is helping Tom on his issue, but Tom you have to understand that everyone in here has their own opinion. I would suggest for you to just do a clean installation just for the FSX for now and if doesn`t work, than you might want to format you PC. If you need call assistance e-mail you number and time that you are available so I can help you over the phone.
We need to get you up and running for the CTP event. Have you already signed up?
See ya.

I tried restoring windows to a date a week before FSX decided to take a dive. I even tried restoring farther back than that ...no joy.
Thiago, I have been having problems here and there with Internet Explorer to the point I switched to Mozilla. I had it in my mind to do a clean install of Windows 7 many months ago but have been putting it off because FSX was running stable. So now that FSX is DOA, this would be an excellent time to do a clean install of Windows 7 as well. Once I get Windows up and running I will definitely will be emailing my number to you for your assistance if you don't mind. As always, I appreciate your help and everyone else's as well. This is really a great community.

If you are going to do a complete wipe and install I would highly recommend:
http://forum.avsim.net/topic/398023-avsim-software-and-hardware-guide-for-fsx/page-2?hl=%2Bsoftware+%2B%26amp%3Bamp%3B+%2Bhardware+%2Bguide+%2Bfor+%2Bfsx#entry2728281
This way you can do some things that is easier to do now than after a reinstall.
