I have an interesting issue with the downloaded DVA DC-8 (all models) with Windows 7 and FSX. Whether I start with the engines on and then shut them down or start with the engines off there is the sound inside and especially outside the cockpit of what seems to be the default Boeing 737 jet engines. There are no other aircraft around. This only occurs with the DC-8. All other default FSX aircraft do not have this issue. In addition, what should be the sound of the DC-8's engines for startup both inside the aircraft and outside are barely discernible... and that's with the sound sliders in FSX Sound settings at maximum.
I've gone in the sound.cfg for this aircraft and have checked each of the wave files for the engine spool up, running and shutdown phases and they all are working fine. I just never hear them from inside or outside of the cockpit.
Interestingly, all of the cockpit switches, vocal announcements, and warning sounds all work correctly and are nicely audible when running FSX. It's just the engine sounds that are not audible.
I've heard this is a common issue with aircraft designed for FS9 that are ported over to FSX. I just purchased the Just Flight DC-8 and none of those aircraft have any sound issues. The problem with Just Flight's DC-8 is that it does not have the 2D cockpit shipped with it. Only the 3D virtual cockpit. That makes flying the DC-8 a chore as you are constantly switching between views in order to activate switches. This is what I really enjoy about the DVA DC-8 is the great full screen instrument panel.
Any help out there?

I think I figured it out. The DVA DC-8's have been ported over from FS9 into FSX. I think that's where the problem occurs. With the DVA DC-8, the FSX sound sliders in the SOUND SETTINGS menu never worked. None of them, not ENGINES, nor COCKPIT, nor ENVIRONMENT. However, for any other default FSX aircraft, they worked fine. I mentioned before that I had purchased and installed the brand new payware Just Flight DC-8. It was developed for FSX and all of the sound features worked perfectly. So I went into the DVA DC-8 aircraft sound folder and instead of having the DVA alias in the sound.cfg file I substituted the Just Flight sound folder and sound.cfg. VOILA!!! Everything works great! All the SOUND SETTING sliders work perfectly, all the button and switch noises as well as the ground crew voices for engine startup all work. There is no longer any default jet engine whine inside and outside the aircraft when the cockpit is dark and the engines are off. The only sound you hear in the dark cockpit is when you turn on the master electrical switch and you hear what I assume is the cockpit air conditioning. The only issue I have now is that the DVA DC-8-72 that I am flying has the CFM56 engines but the Just Flight DC-8 sound files are for the DC-8-42 with the old Conway engines. So I'm comparing the text from the DVA sound.cfg side by side with the text from the Just Flight sound.cfg to see where the problem lies. When I get it figured out (if I'm able to!), I'll post the updated DVA sound.cfg file on a new post for all you smokin' fuel burners!
So basically all I did, to make a long story endless, was to go to the \DVA_DC8_72\sound\sound.cfg file and replace the "alias=\FSFSCONV\SOUND.JET.DC8CFM56" with the line "alias=JF_Douglas_DC8-42\sound.conway" (which is the default Just Flight Conway engine sound folder.)
Thanks Luke and Dylan for your suggestions and interest.
