Basically as I'm sure many long haul pilots have experienced, was on final into EHAM after a 7 hour flight and out of nowhere FS9 crashes to desktop saying your computer has ran out of memory, I am running Windows 8 a very modern pc but in all fairness I do have many add-ons and when I checked the hard drive it says 896 GB free out of 931 used, which would signal that there is plenty of memory left however the answer that I may have too much on my pc and need to rid of some scenery/aircraft.
Is there a limit as too how much a pc can take regards any sim.
I'm sure those who fly long hauls can appreciate what my feelings were when it crashed, its always on landing and never early in the flight

Interesting this happened to you in FS9. I had my FS9 packed with addons and didn't have a problem. But to answer your question, yes, FS9 has a limit but it's not a hard drive related limit. Since the software is 32 bit, it can only handle up to 4GB of virtual memory usage (RAM, VAS). The more complex addons you have, the more of this limit gets used. Once FS9 hits that limit, it will shut down. I'm sure you've heard of all the dreaded crashes with FSX, well that's what is happening. It's just a lot more common with FSX than FS9.
What I suggest you do to help prevent a future crash is to use the "Large Address Aware 4GB Patch". I can't remember exactly how this affects the sim but it's been widely used and recommended and could be the reason why I never had a single crash with FS9. Here is the link to the 4GB patch download: http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php What you want to do is browse to your fs9.exe file and select it and hit ok. The 4GB Patch program will do the rest.
Hope this helps! Keep us in the loop

Am I looking for the words, excecutable successfully patched, if so that's done and I'll try that, for the record the add ons I have are packed also, mainly with scenery, but add pmdg 747/level d 767/QW757 and many others they are mounting, hopefully the 4GB patch will help, only have to wait another 8 hour flight to see

what happens, is you have virtual memory, any add on scenery uses that memory and fs9 was limited to 2gb, if you have multiple airport addons, such as all over the US and europe, when you start your flight, you have a long load time, loading every scenery you have active. even if you are nowhere near it and also how you have your add on scenery stacked in order of loading is the next step. To remedy this problem, apply the <4gb update, disable extra airports you are not using or are nowhere near, and organize your addon scenery in fs9 menu.

I see, never before as it happened until the last flight, so clearly my collection has grown a bit too much for the sim to handle, I've got some airfields I've never even flown to as due to the fact I like long haul flights mean that I rarely get the chance to fly into them, as I say up until now FS9 on the powerful system has been amazing, PMDG 744 flies perfectly on it, no stuttering at all, I think it might be time to do away with those fields I never see

One thing I do whether it helps or not is open task manager and make fs9.exe have a priority of high.

You should check your sceneries if there is any EMPTY texture-folder. FS9 cannot handle them and this tiny little problem usually causes the memory-crashes. Simply delete them and you are probably done.

would it simply read empty texture then or be a folder with nothing inside?

You got to look for a folder with nothing inside. That is what I wanted to say.

I recommend to use the little program Flusifix which can do this job for you. You can find it here: http://www.wolfgang-picheta.de/
The website is all German but there is a Union Jack on the right. Click it and you will get all the explanations in English. This litte tool can do much more for your FS9 then only finding empty texture folders....
it is a must-have in my opinion.
Good luck.
