I'm in the process of purchasing an upgraded PC for FSX. I've been using an iMac + FS9 via bootcamp- which is acceptable, but I'm ready to get something more suitable for upgrading and moving up to FSX.
I'm on a budget, but I'm currently looking into this setup (below) and was wondering if anyone has a similar system who could provide some details on their performance/suggestions. I appreciate the feedback!
Intel Core i5 4440 (3.10GHz)
12GB DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 7770 - 1GB GDDR5

I'm running the i5-3570k OC'd to 3.7 and its stable on EVO air cooler, could go to 4.0 but FSX is running smoothly so why bother. What motherboard you looking at? I'm running the Asrock z77 board and so far so good (knock on wood). 12 Gigs of ram is a lot, especially for FSX. I'm running 8 and it's plenty. Nvidia, I've found, works better with FSX (better colors and smoother lines with Inspector). AMD is a lot less fuss though.

I would recommend doing a custom build; they typically come out cheaper for better performance than pre-builts. If you don't want to build it yourself I build and ship PCs and if you let me know your budget I can get you a parts list together. Feel free to email me at rangingwarr@aol.com

David, I was looking at your computer specs and have a couple of questions. You say that FSX is running smoothly @3.7GHz, what kind of frame rates are you getting and are you running any addon scenery? I am running a Intel Core I7-3770K OC to 4.2GHz, GEFORCE GTX 660, Liquid Cooled, TT 800w Gold PSP, Gigabyte Z77 and sometimes if I'm loaded up (Opus, GEX, REX, UTX, PMDG 737 and one of my addon sceneries like Fly Tampa Midway) I can drop to the neighborhood of 12-15 FPS. I'm wondering if there's something I need to tweak in my system or maybe I'm just complaining about little stuff haha.

I'm not a frame rate watcher, but I'm locked at 25 fps and only time I really see it struggling is around FSDreamteams JFK. My 560ti struggles with PMDG on load up, but fine after that. FSX seems to be taking longer to load up, but once it does, I can pan around the VC with no real significant hits. This is an absolute for someone looking to maximize their FSX experience: http://www.simforums.com/forums/the-fsx-computer-system-the-bible-by-nickn_topic46211.html Nick is a genious. Also you can go here to get a modified fsx.cfg which adds FPS http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

Things to think about, Are you going to FSX? If so then be ready for headaches until you get it dialed in. Are you going to go Prepar3D, if so a strong system is your best option with a strong vid card. Keep the old system you got, you can use it for ancillary programs like weather, ATC, TS, and such. I am running P3D on an I5 not clocked and a EVGA 670 GTX card. Already looking at a 7 series now card. This is a good time if you are looking at P3D since they are about to release 2.01 by the end of the month if all goes well.
