Well, now I've done it ! My trusty old PC with Windows XP developed some serious issues and I decided to buy a better. faster one. The salesman told me that I wouldn't have any difficulty installing all my old programs , and for the most part that was correct. I was able to install everything except FSX which is the one I really need. Well, not entirely true, it is installed but on the rare occasion I can get it to start, it crashes and shuts down. I see I am not alone in this, there are numerous complaints on the internet about the non - compatability of Windows 8.1 and FSX. I have about a week until I have to decide if I am going to take it back and maybe get my old one upgraded. Do any of you guys have a working version of Windows 8.1 and FSX ? If so, what is your secret ?

I have a working version of FSX Deluxe while running Windows 8.1. The secret is to run fsx in compatability mode. Right click on the file "fsx.exe" click on properties, click on compatability, and click Windows Vista SP2, or XP SP3. Please also make sure you have both FSX service packs.

I wonder if you tried "Run As Administrator"
Not totally familiar with 8.1, but I do have a server at work with Server 2012 which uses the same GUI. Sometimes disabling the security measures will also help.

Still need help folks. Darren I have changed the compatability to XP, Vista, Windows 7 and windows 8. Still have the ctrashes no matter where I set it. Norm, yes I have set run as administrator and still crashes. It seems on Windows 8.1, FSX seems OK when opening at the HOME, MISSIONS, LEARNING CENTER AND SETTINGS. However when I select a plane and set up a flight plan, it crashes when I hit "FLY NOW" Any more thoughts and solutions would be appreciated. Thanks

Stan, I use Win8.1 Pro and fly with FSX very well. I used the compatibility tool in Win8.1 to analyze FSX and fix whatever it found. FSX now flys great and I haven't had a CTD in a long time. It prompted me to install my GEX, FEX, and UTX now that FSX is running great. I also never fly in full screen mode. Always windows mode and I have the "Pause on application change"??? unchecked so FSX will continue to fly while I get charts and change my radio frequencies in ACARS. Hope this helps.
