Hi Folks,
I'm currently running intel q8200@3.0Ghz + 4GB RAM + GTX 560. I'm about to upgrade my PC with new CPU which is going to be 4670K, new MB with Z87 chipset, 8GB RAM and SSD. Do you think the upgrade of CPU will increase my frame rate? My GPU is not that bad. On every custom sceneries I got very low fps but not only on additional sceneries. I fly a320 extended X and in cockpit view I get like 15-20 FPS which is extremely low for me. I have REX, GEX, Opus and PRO ATC running with FSX. I have tried everything (tweaking fsx.cfg and stuff) but frame rate is still not satisfying.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Karol:
CPU will help a lot with FSX, however, you might want to research the affinity mask setting in the fsx.cfg file which will help utilize the cores on your processor.
I run an AMD 8-core processor and my setting is:
[JOBSCHEDULER]
AffinityMask=254
I would recommend running your fsx.cfg through this tool after you are setup.
http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html
Also check this thread for your nvidia settings:
http://forum.avsim.net/topic/324786-nvidia-configuration-guide-inspector-2xxxx-drivers-version-20-explanations-of-all-settings/
Good luck. Once tweaked, I think it's a good investment to improve your FSX experience.

Thanks for the answer Bob. You are helpful as always. I have used venetubos's tweaking tool. My AffinityMask is set to 14 like below:
[JOBSCHEDULER]
AffinityMask=14, so you suggest setting it to 254?
Tomorrow I'm gonna try this and read about nvidia settings.
take care

Hey All,
Hopefully I'm not too late on this one but here's my 2 cents....
After 10+ years of building my own rigs and throwing tens of thousands of dollars out the window (which my wife wont let go of) I know a little about building FS rigs. Upgrading your CPU will in fact give you more FPS. I have the 4770k CPU with the Z87 chip-set from Gigabyte. Its a cheetah! However, there are some things to consider. First, try using the FSX affinity tool from Avsim. It allows for FS to be spread over all the cores evenly. Setting the affinity mask in the FS.cfg will only prioritize FS in the CPU. This download allows for all your cores to be used (FS doesn't recognize multicore CPU's.) Also, even with all the rave over SSd's, I don't see any FPS difference in the grand scheme of things. The reason is that all the slow downs happen during texture rendering which has nothing to do with the HD. SSD's will speed up you load time when you first start FS, that's it.
My advice would be to go with the i5 4770k, Z87 chips, and at least 8gb if not more of ram. The 560 is a good buy on the gpu.
PS...BTW, dont max out the 560..its pointless. By putting the AA to 32xcsa..etc your just wasting resources. FS uses 1028 max textures so 8x will do..also if your using a lage monitor or TV, use a lower resolution. It helps stop the fuzzies and shimmers. once agian, 1028mb texture streched to 1920x1600 look terrible, your stretching it.
MySpecs:
4770k i5 CPU
Gigabyte MB - z87
24gb of ram
Alienware Case 1000w PS
FSX, FS9, REX, ActiveSKy, Acars, FSWide, Airtrack, iFly 737 (all at once)
NEVER BELOW 40 FPS/ Average FPS 60 (max i set)

Thank you Chris for this advice.
Unfortunately I can't afford i7 4770K right now. The prices in Poland are killing me and I'm not flying to the US this year. Do you think i5 4670K will be enough? It's not way way worse than your i7.
I have affitymask set to 14. Regarding to this website http://fsxtimes.wordpress.com/2010/08/18/affinitymask/ it is a proper value in my case. Maybe I'm gonna pump it up using the value of 15 but it's only temporarily until I buy a new rig. The SSD will be only for OS not FSX. I'm running a 20" screen with resolution 1680x1050 so nothing huge.
Thank you once more and I'm looking forward to hear from you again.

It happens
I will take that as: Yes, 4670K will be definitely enough.

Thanks, I went to the Venetubo site and I downloaded an fsx.cfg file. My 2.7 GHz (sometimes at 3.2 GHz) now runs fsx much faster and smoother than before.

Yes, the venetubo site is down. The FSX community is in a state of mourning.

we are loosing sites that help us tune the flight sim. what will be the next flight sim is the million dollar question. i have been using flight sim since fs 95 and when it was made from sublogic on my old comodore amiga and things are rapidly going bye bye. Once we open the pandoras box for we not know the content. I want to take a bet at the current pace that things are going what will be the next site to go down. Nothing surprises me anymore....
