Found out my gfx card can support a 3-wide arrangement using nVidia's Surround feature, so I went out and got 3 identical widescreen monitors. The GTX 770 has four display ports: One Dual Link DVI-I, One Dual Link DVI-D, One HDMI, and One DisplayPort.
The monitors have four input ports: One DisplayPort, One HDMI (MHL), One HDMI, and One SVGA D-Sub.
I bought a couple of HDMI - DVI cables (I already had a normal HDMI cable) and hooked it all up. When the DVI connectors are plugged in, all three monitors go dark. Taking a look at the cable packages, the HDMI - DVI cables were wired as Single-Link DVI-D on the DVI end. I suspect this is where my plans fell awry. Based on my research, the only difference between the -D and -I connectors is the -I includes the four additional analog pins so that the connector can work with a digital or an analog display device. So whether I use the -D or -I connector with the monitors' digital input jacks shouldn't make a difference.
Which brings us to the 770 having Dual-Link DVI connectors and my converter cables having Single-Link wiring. According to Wiki, this should already work:
For example, a 1080p HDMI display can be driven by a single-link DVI-D source - since HDMI and DVI-D both define an overlapping minimum set of supported resolutions and frame buffer formats.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface#DVI_and_HDMI_compatibility
So finally my question: What can I be doing wrong?

This is the back of your card here gtx 770
You have 2 dvi outputs. hdmi and display port.
To run a 3 monitor setup, youll need to use the HDMI, DVI-D and DISPLAY PORT connections. *IMPORTANT* On the display port youll need an active display adapter to either HDMI or DVI how ever your 3rd monitor is.
I run the HIS 7970 and run 4 displays. I have to use DVI-D, HDMI, and 2 Display ports with adapters to DVI for my 3x1 + 1 setup using eyefinity.
make sure you identify the DVI D connector on the back of your card the top connection is your DVI-D
and be aware you only have 1 DUAL LINK DVI DVI -D connection on the back. the bottom is single link DVI-I

Each of the three monitors has a DisplayPort (DP) input jack, so wouldn't the active adapter be unnecessary? The bottom DVI jack in your picture is a dual-link DVI-I jack, not single-link. Single-link jacks are blank in the middle:
Also, nVidia lists both DVI jacks on the 770 as "Dual-Link":
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-770/specifications
So based on your information, I should be able to directly connect a monitor with a DP to DP cable, another monitor with my existing HDMI to HDMI cable, and the third monitor with a DVD-D/I Dual-Link to HDMI cable, right? (The DVI-D Single-Link to HDMI cable doesn't seem to want to work)

i said on YOUR card the BOTTOM port is DVI-I the top on is DVI-D
the chart i showed is opposite.
Youll have to use the DVI-D top port with a DVI-D to
your card has DVI-I dual and DVI-D dual. you need to use DVI-D dual not the DVI-I to make the connection.
Your monitors must have display ports and HDMI.
So DISPLAY PORT to DISPLAY PORT to monitor 1
HDMI to HDMI monitor 2
DVI-D top port, to HDMI monitor 3
You CANNOT use your DVI-I connection for multiple monitor config.

OK, but then what does nVidia mean in the 770 specs where they say the multiple display capability is 4 monitors? You can't do that without using the DVI-I jack along with the other three.
The only difference between a DVI-D connector and a DVI-I connector is that the -I connector has the four additional analog video pins. The pin-out of the digital pins is identical between the -D and the -I connectors. So as long as the monitor you're using is expecting a digital signal, it shouldn't care whether that signal is being fed through a -D or -I connector on the other end. If you plug a cable connector wired for -D into a -I jack, there won't be any analog male pins on the cable connector to make contact and the only signals that won't get routed through the cable are the analog signals. For my digital monitors, that's fine.

Thats not all there is larry.
TRUST ME FOR I HAVE THE SAME THING
You have to use the DVI -D connetion output on your card to use MULTIPLE MONITOR SETUP
your display port can handle multiple monitors too using a MST hub,
Your card doesnt support using both DVI ports.
Card have that DVI-I connector for older analog CRT screens. the DVI-D only sends digital data and ignores analog.
You will not be able to use the hdmi port as well as both dvi ports because the hdmi port is shared with the DVI-I port.
I know this is how ati cards work,. which is why your having the issues your having.
Anytime i referenced how the gtx 770 uses 4 monitors was using SLI with multiple cards.

Larry,
when i was running a 3 monitor setup, i had to use my 5830 ati card. it had the same config as your card, But since HDMI and DVI-I share connection. i had to use DISPLAY PORT active adaptor to DVI HDMI and DVI-D to get 3 to work in eyefinity
now i have the 7970 ati card,. and has 2 Mini display ports,.
i have my 4 monitor setup now using the DVI-D HDMI and both mini display port to active adaptor DVI for 4 monitors.
I can actually have up to 6 displays using MST hubs for each mini display port, to 2 extra displays

We know that nVidia wasn't talking about SLI configurations because the specs given are for a SINGLE GTX 770. Not a pair of 770's in SLI configuration and not a 770 using third-party add-ons. I've done a search of the internet and found multiple instances of users using the HDMI port AND both DVI ports on their 770. So far the only one I've found that says you can't use both DVI ports is you.
Re: the AMD 5830
Here's what AMD says about multiple displays in their footnotes:
To enable more than two displays, additional panels with native DisplayPort™ connectors, and/or certified DisplayPort™ adapters to convert your monitor's native input to your cards DisplayPort™ or Mini-DisplayPort™ connector(s), are required.
Re: the AMD 7900 series of cards
Here's what AMD says about multiple displays in their footnotes:
To enable more than two displays, or multiple displays from a single output, additional hardware such as DisplayPort™-ready monitors or DisplayPort 1.2 MST-enabled hubs may be required. A maximum of two active adapters is recommended for consumer systems.
http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/graphics/desktop/7000/7900#
nVidia has no such footnotes attached to their statement that it can display 4 monitors. AMD uses a completely different way to build their cards and therefore, stating an nVidia card can or cannot do something based on the limitations that AMD incorporated into their own products is your proverbial comparison of apples to oranges.
There is also nVidia's Surround System Requirements web page (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/3dvision-surround/system-requirements) which includes a configuration tool. It says ANY port on a single 770 can be used in Surround mode. Note that it ALSO says in addition to the three monitors used for Surround, ANY port can become the "accessory" (i.e. non-surround) display for things like the O/S or whatever.
WHICH brings me back to my original question. If all the ports are usable, then why isn't it working?

Thank you for linking that site, seeing how nvidia structure for 3d surround. i used the tool to conigure and looks like
> Orientation: Landscape
> Accessory Display: Yes, no additional GPU
> Maximum Resolution: 7600x1600
> Maximum Resolution (Bezel Correction): 8192x1600
> Maximum number of displays: 3 in Surround
1 Accessory Display
Special Instructions:
> Any connectors can be used to enable Surround.
> Once Surround is enabled, users can use any
connector for the Accessory Display.
so maybe you need dvi dual link cables,. your single link cables as you first stated wont work with dual link displays and outputs on cards. i would start there.
i tried my best to find the information on that card, and couldnt find anything, glad you did.
sorry about the previous information for AMD.

Be careful of what you wish for. I went with Sean's suggestion of using the DP, HDMI, and DVI ports (using a Dual-Link cable this time) and Surround now works... a little too well. I now get vestiges of motion sickness from time to time while flying. I'm almost scared of what would happen if I plugged in my EZCA as well.
So does this mean I'm going back to one monitor? NO FRIGGIN' WAY! THIS ROCKS!

I can use the second DVI port with my spare monitor, I just have to figure out where to PUT it. I have my (mostly unused) TV mounted on the wall over the top of the three monitors and I've been toying with the idea of using the TV as the 4th monitor via the Single Link DVI to HDMI cable I had bought for Surround. I'll give it a try when I get home from work tonight.

Got things set up. Re: the picture below... the TV overhead has seldom-referenced things while in-flight like ACARS, PFPX, and the Navigraph charts. Still need to tweak the Surround utility a bit to make the transitions between the three monitors better.

I do have another question related to a three-wide setup. Popping out gauges (like the nav display in my picture) results in a stretched out panel which I then have to re-size back down to normal proportions. Apparently the panels are set to display as a percentage of the screen resolution. Is there a way (via fsx.cfg or whatever) to set the defaults so that instead of percentages, fixed pixel dimensions are used for "popped-out" panels?
