Hey guys,
So, I had to reinstall FSX last week, and when I did I decided to take the jump to DX10, especially since Thiago came out with his thread at the same time, and that HELPED A TON...THANKS Thiago!!
I followed Thiago's guide, but changes some of the things, and I added Sweetfx into the mix, and spent a while tweaking that to the levels I like...maybe a bit of tweaking here and there down the line, but I really like it overall.
First some background on my system:
2 GTX Titans 12GB GDDR5 (running 2 Screens)
2 27" Acer HD screens
i7 Core Extreme @ 5.2 GhZ
1 500GB SSD
1 2TB HDD (FSX and all software)
1,000 Watt Corsair Gold Certified PSU\
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
I think that's all the relevant stuff
Ok, gonna try to break this up into sections, so lets see how this goes
OBSERVATIONS
After all my tweaks, and the setting up was done, I was really surprised at the performance increases of FSX, not only with the graphics but also with the Memory usage (VAS) and stuff like that. Before DX10, I had all of my graphics settings at 50% more or less, and was getting 30-40FPS in the cockpit of the PMDG 777 at airports like FSDT JFK, FlyTampa OMDB...etc. and 40-50 in outside views. At default airports I was getting 40-55 in the VC, 60+ outside in terms of the FPS. Once I enabled DX10 I was able to put all of my Graphic settings at almost all nearly 100% (Highest quality/performance) and add more AI traffic, and the FPS only went down 5-8FPS respectively for each situation. In ADDITION to this, when before I would run out of VAS when going into large airports like JFK, OMDB (mostly on arrival after long flights) Now, after doing 4 long test flights to very [heavy] performance airports, I did not come close to going over in VAS usage and did not get that horrible error. Nor did my FPS drop. Memory usage before DX10 was running between 8-10GB and CPU usage was 60+% while running FSX. Now, as you will see in the images it is down to below 7GB at all time Memory usage and almost always less then 50% CPU usage - with the higher settings.
In terms of the graphics, I had to do a lot of tweaking to the FSX CFG, and also to the NVIDIA Inspector settings, and I made my own SweetFX settings which helped a lot and makes FSX look real perty Maybe I can get some of the red tint away, but I really like it overall. (Ill post them)
SO, In conclusion, Graphics aside and how it looks, it has done WONDERS to my system in terms of Memory/CPU usage, which is GREAT for me, and for a lot of people I think.

This was taken while in FSX in external view at OMDB, daylight after DX10 and all tweaks were enabled.

This was taken while in FSX in VC view at OMDB, daylight after DX10 and all tweaks were enabled.
STEPS
1. After reinstalling FSX, I did as Thiago said and ran it for a couple days letting it get used to the system again. I also changed the default flight, and tweaked the settings to where it was working well for me. I installed all of my addons (had some problems there as some know) and I also put the UiAutomationcore.dll in, and FSUIPC (latest version). I then let those changes sink in to FSX some more. *****NOTE**** I BACKED UP MY FSX.CFG, SHADERS, and other Necessary files according to the PDF Thiago posted EVERY TIME I made a change, and this proved helpful because I did have to go back and forth a few times.
2. After a few days I turned on DX10, and restarted FSX, ran FSX again MANY times restarting it maybe every 20-30min and restarting the computer 2 times. Let it all sink into FSX. At this point all the settings were the same in FSX as when DX9 was active. I then followed the PDF guide that Thiago posted to set up DX10 to work. I also used the guide to tweak the NVIDIA Inspector settings, but changed a few things beyond that. Here are my NVIDIA Inspector settings:

After I did this, FSX would not open and so I put the old NVIDIA profile back, but it didnt help. Turns out it was my Graphics driver that was outdated...so I had to update it. MAKE SURE YOURS IS UPDATED BEFORE YOU DO CHANGES.
After all this I changed my FSX settings to what they are now:

Updating the drivers made everything back to normal, and so I let FSX run for a few days on the new settings and get used to it all. I backed up my FSX.CFG Again.
3. After the few days of my system getting use to new settings, I ran Steve's DX10 fixer which I had bought a couple years ago thinking I would update to DX10 then but didnt, well anyway it turned out to help alot and fixed some of the issues I had. I had to update the libraries in it, and I also made sure the DX10 Anti Alaising matched what I selected in NVIDIA Inspector (8x CSAA). I did not change any of the other settings for graphics in the fixer, and ran it as was, and it worked fine!
BACKED UP MY FSX.CFG AGAIN
Now I started on SweetFX. I looked up on google "DX10 SweetFX Settings". NOW, everything I found said I needed some special files to make it work - well I never found them, and have not used them, and SweetFX with FSX DX10 is working perfectly fine, so I dont know if you REALLY need whatever those files were.
ANYWAY, Settings are below:
/*-----------------------------------------------------------.
/ Choose effects /
'-----------------------------------------------------------*/
// Set to 1 for ON or 0 for OFF
#define USE_SMAA_ANTIALIASING 1 // [0 or 1] SMAA Anti-aliasing : Smoothens jagged lines using the SMAA technique.
#define USE_FXAA_ANTIALIASING 0 // [0 or 1] FXAA Anti-aliasing : Smoothens jagged lines using the FXAA technique. WIP - Currently only works in DX9 and you need to use the FXAA injector dlls.
#define USE_EXPLOSION 0 // [0 or 1] Explosion : Scatters the pixels, making the image look fuzzy.
#define USE_CARTOON 0 // [0 or 1] Cartoon : "Toon"s the image. (Interferes with SMAA, CRT, Bloom, HDR and Lumasharpen)
#define USE_ADVANCED_CRT 0 // [0 or 1] Advanced CRT : Simulates an old CRT TV display. (Interferes with SMAA, Cartoon, Bloom, HDR and Lumasharpen, and it has a very high performance cost)
#define USE_BLOOM 0 // [0 or 1] Bloom : Makes bright lights bleed their light into their surroundings (relatively high performance cost)
#define USE_HDR 0 // [0 or 1] HDR : Not actual HDR - It just tries to mimic an HDR look (relatively high performance cost)
#define USE_LUMASHARPEN 0 // [0 or 1] LumaSharpen : Also sharpens the antialiased edges which makes them less smooth - I'm working on fixing that.
#define USE_LEVELS 0 // [0 or 1] Levels : Sets a new black and white point. This increases contrast but causes clipping. Use Curves instead if you want to avoid that.
#define USE_TECHNICOLOR 0 // [0 or 1] TECHNICOLOR : Attempts to mimic the look of an old movie using the Technicolor three-strip color process (Techicolor Process 4)
#define USE_DPX 0 // [0 or 1] Cineon DPX : Should make the image look like it's been converted to DXP Cineon - basically it's another movie-like look similar to technicolor.
#define USE_MONOCHROME 0 // [0 or 1] Monochrome : Monochrome makes the colors disappear.
#define USE_LIFTGAMMAGAIN 1 // [0 or 1] Lift Gamma Gain : Adjust brightness and color of shadows, midtones and highlights
#define USE_TONEMAP 1 // [0 or 1] Tonemap : Adjust gamma, exposure, saturation, bleach and defog. (may cause clipping)
#define USE_VIBRANCE 1 // [0 or 1] Vibrance : Intelligently saturates (or desaturates if you use negative values) the pixels depending on their original saturation.

#define USE_SEPIA 1 // [0 or 1] Sepia : Sepia tones the image.
#define USE_VIGNETTE 0 // [0 or 1] Vignette : Darkens the edges of the image to make it look more like it was shot with a camera lens. May cause banding artifacts.
#define USE_DITHER 0 // [0 or 1] Dither : Applies dithering to simulate more colors than your monitor can display. This lessens banding artifacts (mostly caused by Vignette)
#define USE_BORDER 0 // [0 or 1] Border : Makes the screenedge black as a workaround for the bright edge that forcing some AA modes sometimes causes.
#define USE_SPLITSCREEN 0 // [0 or 1] Splitscreen : Enables the before-and-after splitscreen comparison mode.
#define USE_CUSTOM 0 // [0 or 1] Custom : Write your own shader by editing custom.h, and then enable it here.

ANYWAY, After SweetFX was all done (and that took a LONG TIME, Like 5+ hours of testing) I have let FSX run for the past 4 days with no issues, and all addons working fine. Of course, I might change Sweetfx down the line a bit for colors, but the foundation framework for it is all good for me
Here are pics below of the final product, I did not touch these photos at all, not even for editing..just uploaded to FLIKR and pasted links here.

Hey Joe;
Congrats man... I didn`t use the sweetFX yet. But I`m sure it does change a lot. I`ll give it a try. I`m try to use the one from REX. Hoping I could find it. I couldn`t see the pictures you posted for Nvidia Inspector settings.
Again, very nice images and FPS are amazing good.
People have to understand that FSX has DX10 platform involved and people are finding ways to improve, like Steve that launch the DX10Fixer and many other improvements. I just hope they could share it more and not keep to themselves.
And for those who still looking for their DX9 to be tweak, as I used to tweak mine, with those guys at facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/fswtweakingandtuning/ and they were awesome. Robert was the one, made my whole experience in a better simulator on FSX
Thanks Joe for showing your work.
Best Regards,
Thiago

Hey guys, well I installed Sweet FX along with Flight FX and had sweet FX tweaked using theFX settings inside the Flight FX tool. I got everything looking the way I wanted it so then I went to setting in FSX and checked the DX-10 preview button.Thats when everything went downhill. When I undocked a window my FPS went down under 1 FPS and certain AC loaded as white. I then unckecked the DX-10 preview button in FSX settings and everything went back to being ok.

DX 10 fixer makes sure you are running DX10 properly. If you just tick the box in FSX, 98% of the things will not work. I believe Thiago put an explanation into this above.

Yes i installed Dx-10 fixer and set it according to instructions listed .......I think the problem might be in Flight FX where sweet FX is located, because whether I am in DX-9 or DX10, the FPS drops drastically when undocking window.
I reset all of the Sweet FX setting to default and still had the same problem. I don't know if installing sweet FX adds any changes automatically to FSX Config or anywhere else to cause this issue.

I've seen quite an interesting thread at Avsim previously, where a guy tested Nvidia Inspector settings with DX11_fixed_FSX and it appeared that only SGSSAA setting matters, other stuff could be completely random, it was quite convincing too

I've gone back and forth with DX10. Now that I use the Steam edition I've found that DX10 using the fixer gives me constant crashes of the terrain.dll variety. Never had a crash with a number of settings/tweaks in DX9 in the Steam edition.

Well half of it is solved, I uninstalled Sweet Fx, reinstalled DX10 fixer first and that seemed to resolve the problem.
However, now on my top three monitors when I start FSX up everything is fine, I go to cockpit screen everything is good. I open up another panel window and undock it, everything is good. As soon as I drap the undocked window to the 4th separate monitor, the undocked window turns black, my mouse pointer freaks out by blinking like crazy and my FPS drops as well.

This could be lack of video card. How many do you have running these displays and what are they?

Hey Tom;
Just now saw your posts... One big mistake you did wrong. Installed the Sweet FX on DX9 and than switched to DX10. I don`t have a fix for that. Because you Sweet FX on DX9 already took over.
But let`s try this (no Guarantee) (Back up first you d3dx10_34.dll) ... Remove Sweet FX out of your FSX (folder). Than add this .DLL into your FSX (Folder) overriding https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/79395559/d3dx10_34.dll /Make sure you have checked "Preview DX10 in FSX and hopefully you can work with DX10 Fixer by Steve. By the way, a new version is out. Download and try it.
Let me know.
