I have installed FSX Gold Edition on my Win 8.1 computer. All of the "Missions" load and I am able to fly them with no issues. However when I try to fly a "Free Flight" and click on Fly Now I immediately get the Microsoft Flight Simulator has stopped working message and it closes. I have tried: running as administrator, I have added the UIAutomationCore.dll version 6.0.5840.16386 to the FSX folder. I have all display settings set low. I tried installing FSX into a new folder on C drive, all with no success. Any suggestions?

Generally Windows 8 and 8.1 does not work that well with the FSX. If you still have a chance to downgrade to Windows 7, 64 bit version, I would highly recommend you do so. And once you have downgraded, then try using both the uiautomationcore.dll and find way to twick the fsx.cfg file.

Ok, I found the fix at the Microsoft support forum. "Settings", then "Customize", and then checked the box for "Preview DirectX 10. It is unchecked when you first install FSX. My Win 8.1 computer came pre-loaded with DirectX 11 which is supposed to be the latest greatest. I'll let you know how it goes.

So far FSX is running great with no issues. I have flown several flights with DVA's B737-800 and it looks great. I cranked up all of the display settings and it still runs fine.
