It's finally time for an upgrade (complete new build) and I need some advice.
I'm upgrading to the i7-4790 4.0GHz and I'm not sure what mobo or memory to go with. I've always bought ASUS and Corsair (mobo and memory respectively) but was told by Jetline Systems to go with ASRock and G.Skill for better performance. Any advice?
My GPU will be EVGA GTX970 Superclocked.
Thanks,
James

The rule of thumb is to get GFX Card and Motherboard from one supplier, they tend to work better together that way.

I have been building game systems for myself and friends for a very long time, my recommendation is simple, design the system for what it will be used for mostly. Sometimes the most expensive MOBO is not always the best, my last system I built last January, I went to a MSI Dragon Board and EVGA GTX760 4 gyg mem vid card. Along with 16 gyg of G-skill mem and a I5 4670K chip unlocked. Nothing so far on the market in sims or games makes this thing stutter. Once you settle on a MoBo, then research it and look at the reviews and what the testers used to put it through its paces, then you will know what is compatible and what worked well. Nothing like buying a couple of hundred dollars of mem to find out, yes it will work in your MoBo but its crippled, luckily I found a local mom and pop store that took my mem sticks for credit and I was able to get the chips that the board really needed. That was 4 systems ago but we learn as we go. As far as a mandatory purchase- Water cooler for the CPU, self contained is better! Good luck on your build.

AsRock all the way if you are willing to do an Overclocking. But i7 4790 is not for O/C. But I would go for ASRock. Mine is ASRock Extreme4. Memories I have Corsair Vengeance 2300 8 GB

I'm still working on the new build and was wondering if anyone has any opinions on MSi cards or is nVidia still the way to go with FSX and P3D?

What type of MSI card you are looking into. MSI is Nvidia certification. MSI GTX...

MSI GTX970 Gaming 4GB or EVGA GTX970 Superclocked 4GB. I'm almost certain I'll go with the MSI Gaming 7 Mobo and wonder if its better to go with the same brand GPU? I've always owned EVGA cards, however the review of the EVGA GTX970 indicates that the card runs hot and the MSI 970 runs much cooler. Maybe I'm over thinking this.

Hey James, I have an msi mobo with an evga gtx 970 and have not had one instance of it running hot or loud fans as some reviews say. Maybe it's just luck of the draw, but that's just my experience. I've also OC'd the gpu a bit and increased the voltage with no problems.

+1
I have an EVGA GTX780 3GB that works great, but I use AsRock Extreme Motherboard.

Hello everyone,
My new PC hardware arrived on my doorstep today and I hope to start the building process this weekend (this is my first ever build). Quick question, I plan to use my existing dedicated FSX drive (Samsung EVO 830 SSD) as my new O/S drive (this will replace my aging HDD) and my new Samsung EVO 840 as my new dedicated FSX drive. Do I need to secure erase my existing SSD or can I just delete FSX and install Windows 7 over it (TRIM is enabled).
Thanks in advance!

I would format the drive and do your clean install.

+1. Exactly what I did when I built this rig a month or so ago.

After 3 weeks I finally finished my new PC build and I'm quite happy with the results (this was my first build). Nick N suggests using Afterburner for proper Video Card cooing and I was wondering how many of my fellow DVA pilots use Afterburner. I've notice better cooling as a result but wonder if its necessary to use it. My GPU is an Nvidia GTX 970.
Thanks,
James
