Once the Jet Age took flight in the 60's (pun intended), Northeast Airlines expanded their fleet to Boeing 727's (the finest aircraft ever built BTW) and also leased six Convair 880's. These faster and higher capacity aircraft allowed Boston based Northeast Airlines to not only promote global warming but expand into their competitor's territory, primarily in the southeast to Miami. This was quite an accomplishment for a relatively small northeast based airline. Perhaps it was this type of expansion that encouraged Delta to merge in 1972. Northeast also eventually expanded to Bermuda and the Bahamas before changing their colors.

CV-880 - quite a BIRD. we had one at Pax River Naval Air Test Center in the late '90s to use for a range aircraft for Tomahawk cruise missile testing. It was the only aircraft both big and fast enough to keep up with the Tomahawk and carry all of the instrumentation we needed. We instrumented it and used it for several years. When it took the duty rw to take off, it drew all eyes until we got used to the prodigious amount of black smoke from those CJ-805s, which were really just modified J-79s that we were using in the F-4 Phantom. Since the Phantoms were retired by the F-14 Tomcat, we had plenty of spare engines....and we needed them....

Thanks for giving us another fun route, Andrew.
