If you don't know already, Windows 10 is a free upgrade if you have windows 8.1,8, and 7.
But how will the new OS affect our FSX, ACARS, and VATSIM experience? Or will not much change, or will Windows 10 improve FSX?

Well....... According to various sources, it's between Windows 7 and Windows 8. Not as good as Win7, but better than Win 8/8.1.

So I'm wondering will it affect fsx and acars? If it does I'm not upgrading.

Windows 8, 8.1 got a bad rap from those who either did not know how to make it work properly or were just bashers. I found it to make FSX run faster and with fewer OOM errors when using FSUIPC due to contoller drop out issues. I am now running a beta Windows 10 and using the Steam Edition of FSX. I have made my add-on's work and I find that Win 10 takes care of the contoller drops outs without needing to use FSUIPC. I have encountered no problems except trying to get Radar Contact to run. Now I have that sorted out. I can just about guarantee that Win10 will be just fine.

Windows 10 means the same thing that Windows 8.x meant for me. I'm staying on Windows 7 because I don't need added headaches in my sim.

I have been using Windows 10 since 1st insider build. I am running fsx:se with pmdg, orbx, A2A , trackir, Saitek profight and have not had a problem. The only software issue I have had is with aivlasoft efb, that is due to incorrect programming on their part of the net framework. It was the demo so I haven't really looked into fixes. Nvidia has updated all drivers for 10 btw. Hope this info helps.

FSX was designed for much earlier operating systems. Win7 64 seems to the optimal OS if you follow this kind of thing and while Win8 works fine for some people the majority seemed to have various problems. If you go over to Avsim they have a whole section dedicated to operating systems and I'd have a look there. I've heard that Win 10 is a disaster for FSX but again some people will disagree. If you feeling lucky, go for it, but I'd do some serious checking first.

Most of the people who are saying this, are trying to do things with their flight sim that they were not able to do before and thinking since it is newer and shinier they will get better performance. Because FSX was designed for an older operating system is not 100% valid as to FSX working better in 7 than 8 and 10. If that was the case FSX would work best on XP 32 bit and we all know the CTD's and OOM's we got with that. Windows 10 manages things very similar to windows 7. As the builds progress the issues that most people talk about in AVSIM are disappearing. Most are still talking about build 9926 and we are on build 10159. We have to remember that this is not RTM. So the no turning off of updates ( Microsoft did that so all Beta testers are on the same page), The local permissions and the hardware integration are all works in progress. As for me ( your millage may vary) I have noticed better memory management than 7 and 8/8.1 the OS feels less bloated and the biggest for us simmers, is I enjoy FSX and everything works (except AivlaSoft).

I'm glad I ran across this thread as I'm basically being forced to upgrade to 8.1. I've been putting it off and putting it off in fear that FSX wouldn't run properly but the more I read about it the more comfortable I am getting with the idea. From what I am seeing, there won't be much of a change in performance of FSX by upgrading with the exception of less fatal errors. I guess only time will tell.

If you upgrade from 7 to 10, do you basically have to reinstall everything?

I would, Yes it will be a pain, but as we install, uninstall add-ons, and tweak FSX our registry gets more convoluted and wonky. I would do a clean install that way it would be crisp and new, so start looking for the installs and updates now and if you have the spare HD space on your non primary HD place them there. When I started the beta I had the option to do a clean install or upgrade. I went with the clean install. It was more work but I am happy I did. It took a full Saturday, but what a joy it was to fly Saturday night on a crisp new FSX.

I'm not touching Windows 10 with a 10' pole...no doubt it will destroy the work I've put into my PC with fsx on Windows 7
