DVA should should require online flying, because it will allow a pilot to file a manual PIREP (should something happen to ACARS) and increase DAL traffic on VATSIM.
I see a lot of delta flights on VATSIM, but a lot of them are from smaller VAs.
DVA has a lot of pilots, so we should have a larger presence on the VATSIM.
If online flying can't be required, it should be encouraged.
Thank you fellow DVA pilots and staff!

Correct me if I am wrong but the online pilots manual does encourage Dva pilots to fly online. I have flown once on vatsim it was a great experience. I will have to learn a lot of how to fly. I will say some controllers I dealt with (atc) weren't very loud on the microphone. They were soft spoken actually

i don't always have a supportive wife/dogs/children/life to be online and uninterrupted in front of the computer for 1hr of planning and preflight and then a 1 or 2 hour flight time. VATSIM is great and the controllers are generally understanding and supportive, but it's not relaxing for me to get online and have my focus pulled in 9 different directions and have a VATSIM senior controller sending me nasty message quoting some VATSIM regulation about being online and paying attention. This is why DVA is attractive to so many - you can do flight siming at whatever level of immersion you want - you can take ownership of your experience.
just my two opinion.

As with many things here, the choice is yours. You can have a great career here never having flown online. You can fly every flight online. Pilots are encouraged to fly online merely because this is more of a real world experience, especially when compared to FS2004's AI ATC. But, its not necessary and the choice lies with the individual pilot. For this reason, our participating in online events varies greatly.
DVA (and AFVA for that matter) are what you make of them. Put in a lot and you'll find the enjoyment much more satisfying. We merely offer additional (and free) tools to enhance your flight sim experience and provide a community of support, knowledge, experience, and comraderie.
Brian: i have the same issue. If I can't fly when my children are all sleeping or occupied with their own stuff for a solid 2 hours, I rarely will fly online if I have to talk to ATC. its just not possible and disconnecting, pausing and continuing the flight later isn't something I like to do.
If any of you do take the VATSIM plunge, there is nothing quite exhilirating like going through 5 or more levels of ATC at a Friday Night Ops event!

love it when your @ rotate, lifting off, call out " positive climb: gear up : reach across my desk, raise the gear level, return to the yoke, Tower calls, Contact " contact departure,
reach down change freq, press VOX button on yoke, contact deperature, set your mcp to the heading assigned and new flight level, all within seconds and all by yourself.
Increases the realism and would not have it any other way !

As far as the percentage of Delta pilots online from our airline - there is really something to be said for quality vs quantity. I think this airline is among the best virtual airlines out there and I think our virtual pilots are generally some of the best on VATSIM, especially in comparison to some of the other Deltas out there - just something to think about.
As far as the manual PIREP statement, Jameil, we don't require provide proof of the flight via ACARS unless you are going through your IOE flights from FO to Captain. I think the manual referred to it as an honor system rule for PIREPS.

That would turn away folks who actually don't like to deal with ATC and traffic, I don't mind some traffic and ATC but at the same time I avoid events and actually diverted to a different airport after accidentally blundering into one.

I flew Vatsim for a couple of years, about a decade ago. I finally got tired of trying to find controllers, when and where I wanted to fly, and doing a 1-3 hour flight only to have the only controller in my area sign off when I was an hour away from landing. I use ProATC now, and have ATC everytime I want to fly, and where I want to fly. This weekend I had several flights in the morning, and when I was flying there were no controllers available in the entire US. I would never go back to Vatsim...

I only fly online if I see ATC at my departure airport. This happens about 25% of the time. The rest I just use stock FSX ATC. Also, when I fly online I use a call sign of IAM123, even if it's a Delta VA trip.

In my opinion VATSIM is one of the coolest things ever invented. The only problem is, my ATC fluency isn't that good (especially when I am talking to real controllers). I tried it once and managed to survive. I'll keep studying and hope to get back on VATSIM sooner or later.

Also, is there any easier way to change radio frequencies other than pulling up the radio stack (and painstakingly switching) or buying a radio panel? I got scolded for not changing quick enough. Try landing while trying to switch from APP to TWR... Not easy

Yisrael:
Depending on the program you use, you should be able to type right into the program ".com1 XXX.XX" and that should change the com frequency for you. Check out the manual for which program you use.
Also, depending on the aircraft you use, you should be able to have a standby frequency, get it set to tower well in advance to switch with the flick of a button.
Also, a pilots responsibility (in order) is to aviate, navigate and communicate - I don't know the specific circumstances of your experience with VATSIM, but your first action should be to fly the airplane and then communicate - if they gave you a late turnover, that might be on them.

Jim, it's annoying to do either one of those because when I'm in full screen, vPilot and ACARS don't show up. Then I would have to hit ALT-ENT, click on vPilot or ACARS (which pauses FSX by the way) then type .com etc or click the controller button. There's gotta be an easier way. I'm so tempted to buy the Saitek radio panel, but right now I'm getting the PMDG 737NGX. Should I forget the PMDG and get the radio instead, or is there another way to change frequencies?

I used to fly full screen all the time too and wouldn't consider flying windowed because it was too unrealistic. Now I'm always in windowed mode. I have it set so the task bar at the bottom doesn't show and although there is something on avsim to remove the ribbon bar or whatever you call it on the top I haven't bothered to use it as I don't find the bar distracting.
As far as online flying goes, I really enjoy it but also enjoy flying at my own pace without the "responsibility" of being online. So I wouldn't want to be forced to fly one or the other all the time and I don't think a minimum number of hours or percentage of flights would be fair for those who really don't like online flying or for some reason just can't. But i do agree that it adds another whole element of realism and should be encouraged.

The best way to combat this is to change both of the frequency windows. As in, when I'm at KATL and getting clearance, I have the let COM1 on delivery, and the right COM1 (standby depending on aircraft) on ground.
When I do the 747, there are six different COM stations you can tune in on and select, So I'll have the delivery, ground, tower, departure, center, and approach (in case of go-around). After I get to cruise, I look at who is online and change the remaining 5 not in use for the arrival airport's frequencies.
All it is really is planning ahead of time, so it gives you something to do while in cruise calculating fuel and ETA/ATA.

Use ACARS to control your radio frequency changes on the controllers tab....fast and accurate....also you can set your arrival ILS freqs using the .runway command in ACARS. Great program. Check out its capabilities in the manual or just type .help in the first ACARS tab to see all available commands...

Love flying on VATSIM when I can. But with wife and kids it's hard to commit 1-2 hours uninterrupted time. Chances are at some point I'll have to step away for a minute or two at least. Unless it's very very late in the evening, in which case there are usually no controllers on anyway.

Saturday night the controller was giving me instructions while at the same time my wife was talking to me... (giving me instructions too ).
She said "tell him to wait a minute".
It's tough being online sometimes when the real world is happening all around you, but I do see tons of DVA guys online. Especially in and out of ATL.
I made a filter on Vatspy that highlights all the DAL/DVA/NWA/DVH/KLM/AFVA/ASA flights and I'd say more often than not, one of our pilots is at the controls.
Last night I landed right behind one of our pilots in St. Petersburg Russia.
A couple weeks ago I was above 74N and crossed paths with Soonho somewhere over NW Canada.
I think it's pretty amazing what we have going on Vatsim.

Yeah, we are all over the map Bob. Often times I'll check the ACARS live map just to see who's where right now and I love the features we have that others don't.
And lately I've been taking steps off of Online flying just to get my rank up and through the roof. Trying to multitask is not that hard but trying to keep good landing stats is..

VATSIM is hard to get used to and like some of the older people with wife and childen, its hard to have a life and a pilot life. No one should be required to fly VATSIM. Even though i encourage people to fly, i really wish more flew.

Its funny how perspective can aim.
I for one cannot fly without being on Vatsim, Perhaps its always me using SIDS and STARS flying hardcore, that MSFS default cant do, or just want the best realistic experience possible.

Fsx can't don't STARs but it can do SIDs...
I do SIDs all the time, PFPX programs any missing waypoints into the flight planner as custom waypoints.
Never once had a problem

If one knows how to use ADE and the included approach editing , and has lots of time, realistic STARs can be done.
Both ATC and AI will then use these approaches.
I've noticed that FS9 ATC seems to do some basic SIDs for some airports. I fly FMC programmed SIDs and sometimes the ATC directions kinda follow the same route.
On topic now, I chose DVA, just because one could do offline flights, and upload the data afterwards.
So I can fly, and pause, when I want, when RL allows it.
Just my €0.02...

I get a more secure connection when I log on to Squawkbox using FS9. If I fly off line I get intermittent sound problems and visual flashing occasionally on the GPS display if equipped. This is all since I re-installed FS9 on my windows 7 machine. Consequently I rarely fly off line. But I also like busy real world environment with real people in the air and on the ground even on the quiet times of day.

I too love flying on VATSIM. ALL of my 'online' buddies are because of VATSIM. Some of them are/were DVA pilots, some are VATSIM controllers, a few are both.
To me an offline flight in my logbook doesn't 'count' as much as one flown online whether there's any ATC coverage on the route or not.
As others have stated, that's what makes DVA, IMHO, the best VA going. Everyone can get as much out of it as they want. Make it as close to real as you want.
This may belong in another thread, but are any of you as excited about the advancement in VR technology as I am. VR systems like Oculus VR will really put us in/on the flightdeck. Imagine 360° immersion.
No more spacebar-move the mouse to look around. Just turn your head. If they tie that in with the add-on that allows you to move about at will we'll be able to go outside and do a 'virtual' pre-flight of the aircraft.
They are also working on devices that you hold in your hands that will also interface with your virtual environment. Imagine being able to work all of the controls and instruments with your hands/fingers.

LOL, I am a twitch online streamer and stream my flights alot of time and it seems that during takeoff and approaches my chat blows up and starts asking questions and trying to distract me, as if flying your aircraft and dealing with ATC with one monitor isn't bad enough during events.
