It's from more than a week ago, but I haven't seen anything here yet.
For people still flying FS9, on Win7 or higher.
http://myonlinesecurity.co.uk/september-2015-windows-updates-kb3086255-breaks-many-games/
http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?293174-This-is-a-warning-to-all-fs2004-users-who-run-this-program-on-microsoft-windows-7!!!!
KB3086255 disables SafeDisc/Securom copy protection (they seem to have security issues and aren't allowed to run on Win10 and also Win8 & Win7). Which means FS9 and games using these copy protections won't run anymore.
Ironically, installs using "no CD stuff" are not affected.
A workaround here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086255
Way to go M$.

DRM does not benefit honest, paying customers. The NoCD patch is the first thing I put into a clean FS9 install, followed by the LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE flag on the executable.
Cheers!

The work around does not work. SEC DRV START is not recognized. I re-stored to 9-5-15 so I can fly and I am still messing around with trying for a fix.

Hey Scott,
I suggest you take Luke's advice...
Or don't install KB3086255. But that means turning off auto updates.
If you set updates to notify, you can hide KB3086255, and still install other updates you may want.
This "security risk" was supposedly know for several years. Now all of a sudden it needs to be fixed.
Well not fixed, that would mean updating their secdrv.sys and that would cost M$ several $. So they just block the driver.
And who still plays 10-15yr old games anyway... (cynical smiley)

I un-install 3086255 when I want to fly. I let my machine re-install at shutdown at the end of my flying day. Next I will no CD patch when I get time amidst all my other garbage I need to do. I am going to fly FS9 til the cows come home. I see a few of the larger cows coming home now just over the hill by golly.

The only additions I've done to make FS9 run here for me is exactly what Luke Kolin did. I also have it out of Program files and into a folder discretely named MSFS.
You should also have windows defender and UAC (User Account Control) off, as it cures many bugs with both addons and FS9.

Luke, what is the LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE flag? What does it do & what does it do to FS9 in particular?

Jon I can tell you that it increases the amount of VAS you can use. Rather than 2 GB for x32bit OS (operating systems) it will increase it to 3 GB, and 4 for x64 OS.
If you're running Vista, Windows 7, 8/8.1 or 10 on a x32 bit system, you should do this. The main reason is it stops OOM (Out Of Memory) from occuring. An OOM is essentially your computer running out of VAS (Virtual Address Space) or the memory allowed for a specific running program. You may have 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, or even 16 gigs of RAM, but only 3-4 is used on programs like FS9, FSX, P3d. Once you've used all the memory then boom, your simulator will tell you you've run out of VAS and it will now close. There's nothing you can do at this point, not even save it an restart.
If you're having this issue with OOM's, do it. It primarily occurs on heavy files like UK2000 scenery with the use of high end payware aircraft. Although there are tons of other possibilities to run out of VAS, it's not just limited to those situations. I don't know everything about it, but that's what I learned from it when I had the issue with my iFly 747V2, it absolutely drained my VAS.

Jacob nailed it. FWIW FSX since SP1 already has this flag set, so no need to do anything in the FSX/P3D worlds.
I don't think it's ever made a difference for me (FS9 doesn't consume too much memory in my configuration), but it's a 30 second fix and might save a flight or two.
Cheers!

I'd still do it because then you should never have to run into that mess. I've only had it happen once and that was a flight from EGLL to OMDB in the iFLy 747V2. Ran out of memory somewhere over the Arabian peninsula.

Hi, All,
With all due respect to M$, I disabled "Auto Updates" on my WIN7/64 Ultimate long long ago, when I took it as a friendly advice from a PC professional guru.
That saved me lot of commotion and searching for useless solutions (even through M$ database & support) to unfamiliar and annoying situations while I am in flight or else.
Those so called "UPDATES" are in most cases undercover ways of searching your PC, so just avoid and disable that function. In the worst case you can always enable it again.
