I have been using FS 2004 for about eight years now, with no problems. Today I clicked on the desktop icon as usual and for some reason it said that I "must be logged in as Administrator", I am, and always have been logged in as admin. I right clicked on the icon and selected " Run as administrator". Now when I click on the FS icon the User Account Control window appears asking if I want to allow changes............ I click on yes and nothing happens. FS will not start. I then completely removed FS2004 and all associated files and reinstalled FS2004. I now see that the FS desktop shortcut icon has a Windows shield embedded in it which I assume has something to do with a compatibility issue. When I click on the FS 2004 icon now all I get is the User Account Control window asking if I want to allow changes........I click yes and nothing happens. I have run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter several times tying all of the choices with no success. FS will not start. I also have FSX installed on this computer and it still opens and runs just fine, and I have no other computer issues. I am running Windows 8.1 IE 11 What the heck? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You for your reply, I tried disabling UAC as suggested, moved the slider to "never" and restarted my computer. Same response FS 2004 will not open. However I do not get the UAC window pop-up now. Still have the blue and gold Windows shield right next to the FS shortcut.

You've got the Windows Update that disables SafeDisc. Use the FS2004 NoCD patch.
Cheers!

Sounds great, Where do I find that and how do I do that? Or can I just remove that update? I Googled the no CD patch and got a lot of suspicious download sites with no clear instructions on how to apply it to FS2004.

Ok, I found a site that worked: https://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/317/no-cd-patch-for-flight-simulator-2004 Works great! I contacted Microsoft Support and after an hour of remote connection with my computer (free) they said that it was a Adobe Flash Player update issue! Thanks for the help

Thank You George for your reply. I found, removed, and hid the KB3086255 update as suggested. I checked the info link for that update and sure enough it states that "Some video games may not work properly after installation of this update" What the heck Microsoft ??? An update that disables one of your own games? As I said earlier FS 2004 is now working fine with the No CD patch that I installed, however it is still running as administrator which requires ACARS to be run as administrator as well. I do not seem to be able to remove administrator settings. I really do not want to do a un-install-reinstall of the game and risk loosing add-ons and settings that I have had for a long time. I just do not like running the game as "administrator". Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Yes, I remember seeing the option to save files and settings during a reinstall that I did about two years ago. However I did loose some stuff during the install anyway. I have resisted the free Win 10 update from my current Win 8.1 simply because too many people are having compatibility issues just as you are. Also I do not see that Win 10 offers any advantages over my current OS. I may reconsider Win 10 in the future when Windows gets some of the bugs fixed.
