With Delta codeshare Korean Airlines taking delivery of their first Boeing 747-8I (intercontinental), DVA Operations and the 747 program staff are placed to add this fine monster of an aircraft to the fleet. This will be a secondary rating for the 747 program for now. Pilots with the 747 rating can request the additional rating via the Pilot Center.
This aircraft can carry 467 pax in 3 class configuration 7,730nm at a cruise speed of Mach 0.91. The Korean Air version is designed for 368 pax.
Pilots can download the aircraft for FS9/FSX from the Project Opensky site here: http://poskyarchive.com/category/boeing/b747-8/
Pilots can download the FSX/P3D version here: http://www.rikoooo.com/en/downloads/viewdownload/55/759
The Rikoooo link utilizes a tweaked FSX 747 cockpit so be sure to read the info on the web site.
Currently, there are no Korean Air liveries so feel free to download the paint kit from the FS9 link and create one. I took a B744 posky Korean Air livery, renamed some of the files and created one myself. Its not perfect as you can see by the screenie and the HL number isn't accurate but its good enough for now. Korean Air Air livery.
More info on the real Boeing 747-8I can be found here: http://www.boeing.com/assets/pdf/commercial/airports/acaps/747_8.pdf
More info on the real Korean Air 747-8I here: https://www.koreanair.com/global/en/traveling/fleet-info/b747-8i/b747-8i-368--seat-map/
Also, KE flights 23 and 24 in our schedule database represent the first flights planned for the 747-8I (RKSI to KSFO) and are ready to be flown.

I have not purposely increased the fleet master and some of the other requirements because I didn't want them to be a moving target. I've been kicking around possibly increasing the number to truly require all in our fleet but I didnt' want someone who is 1 or 2 aircraft away to all of the sudden have 14 more aircraft to reach the accomplishment. That's also why a lot of accomplishments require less than the total possible. You wouldn't lose the accomplishment if I did this but you'd likely achieve it again.
A big however is that now pilots can achieve it without the Concorde rating.
Its tough trying to hit a moving target when the fleet continues to grow. I anticipate the A350 in one or more forms will be next on the horizon. Delta is schedule to get one in 2017 I believe.

Its good to see these new -8 coming on line. I just flew a UA747-400 and lemme tell you those things are old in the tooth. The interiors just look terrible. It does not help that UA does nowhere near as good of a job of keeping their planes looking good like Delta does.

To be quite fair... It's not all that special in the 747 either for Delta, even on top deck...
I wish they'd just throw in accent lighting for all their aircraft now. Blue lighting would be AMAZING for flying... I just don't understand why the don't do it already on some of their newest jets. I flew on a 737-9 with it once so far and it was great.

The mood lighting and other similar enhancements are not installed by Boeing/Airbus, or in any of their factories for that matter. The installation has to be taken care of after delivery, and I am willing to bet that Delta tries to schedule it for when the aircraft has a heavy check that requires the cabin to be disassembled anyways. It is very expensive to take an aircraft out of service - I have actually seen more older 757s as well as MD-88s with the mood lighting, than any other type. Supposedly, it takes three years of LED usage to make it worth the cost of installation. Luckily this is not a variable that takes part for most of their fleet, short of a few of the oldest 757s.

When I was a 757/767 instructor a few years ago I got to do several special projects including aircraft aquisition. A 767ER was generally considered to cost about $140,000/day, and a 757 about $75,000/day out of service. Heavy checks only occur around 5 to 8 years, so that is far too long a time horizon. Delta will schedule "special visits" to accomplish interior mods and combine them with lower order timed checks, like a C Check or a PSV (Program Service Visit). For example, the lie flat seat mod on our 76ERs was done in Hong Kong and Singapore outside the normal D Check for most of them. But, the those MROs (Maintenance , Repair and Overhaul) get very efficient at doing these checks and mods and have incentives for delivering zero defect work on time or early. Also, as a practical matter, Delta does not have near enough square feet of hangar space available to park a jet in a bay for 2 months.
