Ok fellas, I'm currently running AMD FX6300 (3.5Ghz O.C) with 8GB RAM DDR3 and a GTX460. I'm one of the few I suppose that still runs FS9. With this setup I'm able to run FS9 at MAX setting with 3rd party addons like REX, Ultimate scenery and FSdream Team scenery along with the likes of iFly, PMDG, Qualitywings and Level D airplanes. With all these I can run for example iFly 737 in JFK MAX setting @18FPS to 24FPS on a clear day. When it's overcast it can get low as 10fps.
So I've had this setup for quite a while and I want to upgrade staying on the AMD platform due to it's cost and also looking at upgrading my video card as well. Now I want to upgrade where I can get a substantial increase in performance in FS9. I would like to hear some suggestions from you guys on what processor and video card I should be looking at especially if you're running AMD processor and have extremely great performance in FS9 or FSX.
Please don't inform me about Intel and their processors I know about them. But as stated already I'm staying with AMD for now because of it's cost. Thanks guys!

I just built mine and the GTX 980ti is running p3d with payware airports, max settings, orbx software, REX, PMDG 777 and everything else you could imagine at 50-60 fps. Highly recommend if you can afford.

Ok so i may be able to help you, I was basically in the same boat but forced to upgrade when i spilled a drink into my pc..
anyways, I had a AMD 8120 4.2 ghz 16ghz ddr3 1600 ram, and HD7970 2gb card,
No matter what I did with my processor it was the bottleneck of my system giving me ok performance but also running 5 monitors between eyefinity and dualhead2go.
I was also like you who always wanted to go AMD for the cost, but the Cost differential was the limiting factor that i didnt see untill I went with Intel.
I had an option to go with the 8350 FX 8 Core 4.0 ghz with room for overclocking. priced at the time around 200$usd. now ~100 USD,
or I also had the option of going with the Intel 4790k 4.0 ghz 4 core with Hyperthreading giving it 8 streams.. more on this later,
and pairing it with the asus Z97a board, with great bios utility.
the intel 4790k was around 300$ with the board around 100$ vs 200$ for the new 8350 FX chip.
Now remember my circumstance may be difference from you for i am also driving 3 x 1080p displays 23" @ 5818 x 1600 for the outside view and 2 lower 1080p displays running 3840x1080 for my 2 custom MIP panels
which requires a lot of PC power and Not to mention FS9 not using multicore processors, and no GPU blending usage for graphics,
I was running the CS757 which is cpu intensive, with custom expanded size displays, with muti monitor spanning as fsx fs9 degraded frames when spanned, and with this setup i was getting 20-30 fps on the ground, and 30-45 in the air depending on the cloud saturation,
After the accident and forced to upgrade, I went with the 4790k and overclocked it to 4.7 GHZ using 1.3v core and 47x multiplier in the simple to use BIOS and just disabled quiet mode and throttling, Also using My previous H100i CLC cooler with noctua fans,
and impressive to see the increase of voltage on the core but the h100i keeps the cpu core @ 30c on idle and 53C max with AIDa64
My GPU was also damaged so I went with the ASUS STRIX R9 390 8GB VS GTX 970 for eyefinity reasons, but also trading blows between the 2 both seem solid choice just pick team red or green.
So the results came, . I booted up FS9 in the CS757 simpit, and loaded my cold and dark parked @ KBOS flytampa Gate A16 and i always have my FPS counter in the top left corner, and usually was between 22-28 fps parked and 25 fps when i turned the plane on turning on the
CPU intense Panels.
I turned on the sim and looked up and saw 60 fps ! turned on the displays and 60 FPS ! as i backed away from the gate, my map moved with such fluid motion and the Vor pointers swung around so fast ! ! and when my VOR pointers when tuned moved so precise
It was a game changer, Everything I throw at this system eats it with no problem,
Also i prevously tried to play FSX SE on my old AMD system, just DEFAULT FSX SE at flytampa KBOS, using a default 737-800 with no PANEL. just outside view, and with just the spanning outside view was getting 15 fps taxing around,
With my new Setup build, Same thing taxing around KBOS 180 FPS! ! ! ! ! ! !
all has to due to the INtel Hyperthreading and CPU with 4 physical cores and 4 logical cores, which allows more throughput of data than AMD.
So In closing, if your running a single Display with FS9, you should have no problem getting near 45 fps with a 8350FX but you will need to upgrade that GPU.
You could stay with AMD and get OK benefits that will throttle, but My choice to go to team Intel solidified my decision and As the saying says By once Cry Once,
dont forget that stock settings On fs9.cfg arent that great, and s a good idea to modify your .CFG file for better performance and better quality
check out http://www.flightsimworld.com/forums/topic/28865-fs9-tips-and-tricks/
is also a good idea to go into the BIOS and disable any TurBo function and thermal control limits in the CPU and manually change the core clock for overclocking manually and make sure you have a good cooler to keep the temps down.
All in all as others have stated all comes down to budget, with my Intel 4790k Z97a Board and Strix R9 390 8gb card was around 700 USD $ I look at it as an investment for this will last me many years
and not just for flight sim, Running triple monitor eyefinity with AAA games on max settings getting over 60 fps. and getting a 8GB card future proof

Your story has got me on the side of just going Intel with a new motherboard and video card after. Really inspirational it was. So after doing some additional research on the i7 4790K processor I've decided to go along with Intel i7 processor insted of sticking with AMD. Since I'm going this route I'll have to get a new motherboard. However that $650 budget would now be for just the intel processor and motherboard. Any recommended i7 and motherboard combo for $650 or less.
From what I've seen the i7 4790K is a beasting processor and I won't mind getting it but if I can get one that's even better and stay under budget the better. Taking suggestions! Once again thanks!

Ok ! so you can get the i7 4790k for 319$ from amazon here http://www.amazon.com/Intel-BX80646I74790K-i7-4790K-Processor-Cache/dp/B00KPRWAX8/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1452387335&sr=1-1&keywords=4790k
and Asus Z97a for 164$ here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TXBP1NS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
and this will bring you to 483$ and if you are a prime member you can get 2 day shipping free ! well under your budget!
I would also recommend a nice water cooling solution, and wondering what cooling you are using now? I had the Noctua NHd15 and it was perfect but rather large but kept things cool
I then went for the Corsair H100i and keeps my overclocked 4.7 Ghz 1.3 volts @ 30 c at idle and ~51c max temps using aida64
the h100i is on amazon for 104$ here http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Performance-Liquid-Cooler-CW-9060021-WW/dp/B00SV7IEJI/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1452387570&sr=1-1&keywords=h100i
and would then put you for a total of 587$ ! well under your budget still !
If you need any help please dont hesitate to ask !
edit also i was hesitating on going from AMD to INTEL due to windows boot errors , when i first booted up my machine after the hardware replacement WENT RIGHT TO THE DESKTOP AT RECORD SPEEDS! ! ! the ssd helps too !
and all I had to do was activate windows once online. !!! No format needed!

I also have the NHd15, its massive but just manages to fit in my case. Does the h100i provide better cooling because I think even with the NHD15 my CPU temp is pretty high 43 degrees at idle and up to 70 degrees on high load.
I have an SSD and it's great to know I do not need to format. Thanks for all the info Sean. I'll take a look at the motherboard you suggested.

Hmm 43 idle? COuld be a contact between the block and the cpu, I HIGHLY recommend Artic Silver 5 thermal Paste and yes what Case do you have?
I have the Fractal R5 window case and since the H100I block is shallow and i have the radiator mounted to the top of my case with the 2 fans mounted on top pulling air through the radiator and out teh top of my case,
these are my temps. the interior of the case with its fans keep the temps inside only a few degrees higher than ambient,

Make sure you use a good compound between the cpu and your cooler. I highly recommend ARTIC silver 5

I got the components yesterday. Just as I was about to replace the motherboard I realized I didn't have the back plate for the 1150 slot type for the i7.... You know, since I was using AMD. It's been so long I had the nhd15 I couldn't remember where I had the box and I've moved a couple times to most likely I threw it away. So I had to order the back plate from Amazon. Won't get here till Monday. So now my computer is dismantled and I got to settle for my iPad throughout the weekend. Oh I did order the Arctic 5 silver with the order.

@ Caleb,
Did you get your components in and tested?
I got the components yesterday. Just as I was about to replace the motherboard I realized I didn't have the back plate for the 1150 slot type for the i7.... You know, since I was using AMD. It's been so long I had the nhd15 I couldn't remember where I had the box and I've moved a couple times to most likely I threw it away. So I had to order the back plate from Amazon. Won't get here till Monday. So now my computer is dismantled and I got to settle for my iPad throughout the weekend. Oh I did order the Arctic 5 silver with the order.
ha that happened to me, Got my I7 and forgot the h100i brackets left in the box somewhere, but luckily found the standoffs and bracket, saved me from ordering a new H100i
Ok so back to talking about the difference between the H100i CLC cooler and the NHd15
I was getting similar Temps @ idle between the 2, the difference was max temps were 60c for the NHd15 and 54C for the H100i
I mostly did it for Aesthetics but with the fractal R5 case, using the Low profile water cooler plate, allows for an excellent air flow in the case, reducing the inside temps dramatically as you can see on my pic previous, I maintain a 2 degree difference of internal case temps
compared to the ambient temp in the room.

Got my computer up and running. Tell you what Sean, I'm happy I took your advice on the upgraded hardware because I'm getting 50fps in Vegas, lots of clouds FSdream team scenery in the ifly 737 2D panel compared to 24fps with my old system. WOW! what a major performance increase. In spot view im getting 98fps! This is with everything maxed! I didn't even bother OC.
I'm doing a stress test with prime 95 and so far my CPU temp has not passed 63 degrees, so I know for sure I got that cooler on good. I idle at 26 degrees. I'm yet to do a full flight yet but I hopefully would get one done soon!

that is just FANTASTIC ! ! ! ! ! ! When your ready to OC let me know its EASY! and your temps look good! ! my MAX temps are lower in my H100i @ 4.7 GHZ on the 4790k than the 8120 @ 4.2 ghz with the NHd15
Just to keep that in mind.
SO glad you got your pc working again and better than ever ! isnt it great !?!?
Congrats Again! ! !

Hey Sean, boy I'm I glad I took your advice. I'm still in awww of the performance im getting. I did the ultimate test where I maxed out anti-aliasing settings, everything in fs9 has perfectly smooth edges, I loaded up a flight in what I've experienced as the most tax-ing scenery at dawn dusk and night FSDream Team DFW in my Ifly 737 settings maxed in FS9......high resolution clouds, basically everything I could throw at this thing....
Results : I usually lock my frames at 30fps.....I had now drops at all, not even a budge from push to taxi to takeoff to cruise. If i unlock frames to unlimited it still hits 50fps!
I feel like im in heaven! Now I can't wait to get out of work to fly...lol!
I can't thank you enough bud! And I havent even OC and don't even bother wanting too
