Hello fellow pilots! I can't decide in what to do and maybe you could help :). I currently have a laptop hooked up to a monitor - that's my flight sim equipment (exc. yoke and so on). The laptop isn't bad, but it's starting to slow down. The specs of it are the following: i7-3630QM @ 2.40 GHz (quad), 8GB RAM, Nvidia GT750M 2GB (Lenovo Y500) and I have that hooked up to a Dell S2440L monitor. The FPS I get now in a 737 are MAX 19, even in default. I normally land with 10 FPS (even default). My sim is P3D v2.4. Now, I've been thinking, maybe I should upgrade my processor. I'll buy the processor and give it to someone to put in for me since I'm not good at all "inside" the computer. But I don't know what processor... Then I thought, maybe I should get a desktop, but my budget is only $1000. When I look at what others have - it's like $2000-3000. If I were to switch - what PC could you recommend? I don't need 90+ FPS, all I need is at least 20 in New York or London. So ideally - I want my FPS to be locked at 30 in a PMDG plane. Settings could be set to medium without shadows - no big deal for me. No livestreams, no recordings. So, it all comes down to - should I upgrade my processor (or something else) and to what? or should I get a desktop and if so - which one? Hope someone could help me decide

Ok so here is my experience, I could never think to use a laptop for gaming unless its 1300+ gaming laptop but never forflight sim, just the bottleneck of cpu and gpu mobil versions.
I went from an amd cpu all my life to finaly a I7 4790K overclocked to 4.7 ghz, and havent looked back. This handles everything in the order of magnitude of 10 better than my amd fx8120 4.2 ghz.
You already have a separate display monitor so your all set with that, I have put up my basic parts picker for what I have and use, its a little over your 1000 budget setting 1260$ but you can prob get better prices on amazon ect

I hope this helps. I have HP all in one and downloaded micro sim X and was ok for a short while, and after sending my new computer back to HP twice they sent me a (STICK) they use at the factory to boot new computers and finally told me it was Microsoft causing the freezing. Well I called Microsoft and they advised yes, some items have problems so get another screen and use it also. So I had one and use it for acars and atc only on the separate screen and have not had anything freeze so I suggest you make sure U don't need two screens for what U are going to do. I fly a lot and going for 1,000,000 miles I think in about 6 or so months with around 820,000 now so good luck and hope this helps......Patrick

Correct me If I'm wrong, but I should turn off my laptop display and only use my main monitor, correct? Thanks!

i use Bios to do it manually
pretty easy for me will vary from chip to chip.
UEIF screen , go to AI tweeker page,
Synch all cores I set mine to 4.7 by putting in 47
Then for Cpu voltage, MANUAL mode and 1.264 for me, try that and use AIDA64 or prime to see if shes stable, you may need to go to 1.3 volts, depends on the chip
turn off all power saving utilities in bios and turbo options,
also make sure you have a decent cooler.
Thats it, My Cpu stays 33c idle 70c max using prime 95 and 55c when gaming,

Anton:
First - Thanks for using a Lenovo product. My family appreciates that.
Second - Like Sean said, a desktop is the way to go where you can upgrade piece by piece of the years. Put an emphasis on the best processor and motherboard you can afford first. After that, video card and memory, cooling, SSD, then case.
Third - Keep your laptop. You might find running ACARS, EFB, Weather and other apps on a separate PC will be convenient and also keep your FS computer clean and fast.
There are some good gaming laptops out there, but laptops are very limited on upgrading, and cooling is always an issue.
My setup is i7 6700k w/ ASUS RoG Hero VIII Motherboard, 16gb DDR3200 Ram, Thermaltake Liquid Cooler, Samsung 850 Evo SSD, NVidia Geforce 970GTX.
My days of tweaking are over. I get crazy high frame rates with all settings max'd in P3D and FSX.
If you get the high-end CPU and MLB out of the way first, the rest you can add in as you wish.

Hi Ralph. Two types of "tweaking".
1 - Flight Sim Tweaking - usually means there's settings in the software you can adjust to gain better performance
2 - Hardware Tweaking - settings in your PC to gain performance
This guy does a pretty good job explaining: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXj90GBPdc8
