Formed in the late 60’s as a merger of Bonanza Airlines, Pacific Air Lines and West Coast Airlines, Air West, which became Hughes Airwest (RW), was eventually acquired by Republic Airways, then Northwest, then Delta. Primarily Hughes Airwest flew DC-9-14/32’s, Boeing 727-100/200’s, Folker F27’s, DHC-6’s and Piper PA31 310 Navajo’s. This new historical airline adds flights to several new destinations, which primarily are on the US’s Pacific Coast. Some are new to our database and some exist but don’t have any flights until now.

No problem with KLMT - fly any big or little iron you want in there. RW 14-32 is over 10k ft. long to serve the ORANG F-15 base there. I RW took off on that runway many times while a student 54 yrs ago when a NORAD interceptor base was there with F-101B Voodoos- the C-150 took a LONG time to get to the departure turn point. You really had to pay attention to the tower while shooting T&Gs - those Voodoos were much faster than you were.

Voodoos: AWESOME. The hard-light burners never seemed light at the same time. Watched them at Bangor with the MEANG.

Amen, Jim. On a still winter night at our place, 2 mi from the base, when they took off from rw14 it sounded like twin cannon shots, normally 0.5 secs or so apart - BOOM-BOOM! On a full alert launch climbout you could watch those twin torches go up until they were around 75 deg. above the horizon - nearly over your head, angling out towards the Pacific coast. Those babies could really climb! And - they landed very hot.....
