Hey guys, as suggested in the title of this thread, I am wondering if it is worth upgrading my current system to run X Plane 11-if it's possible at all. Here are my current specs (~4 1/2 year old computer):
Link to manufacturer’s specs: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03359045
Manufacturer/Model: Hewlett-Packard H8-1234
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Motherboard: M3970AM-HP (Angelica 2)
Processor: AMD FX-6120 Six-Core Processor…3.50 GHz
RAM: 10.0 GB Memory…DDR3-1600 (RJ – I believe 16.0 GB is the ceiling in Windows 7 Home Premium)
GPU: HP Radeon HD 7450 - 1 GB DDR3 SDRAM
I downloaded the X Plane 11 beta last night, and the sim was so slow that it was unusable...pretty much a slide show. I was thinking about doing the following upgrades:
1) MSI Radeon RX 480 DirectX 12 RX 480 GAMING X 8G 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support ATX Video Card -
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137023
and
2) 16 GB memory (not sure which one to buy).
I would like to defer a new computer purchase for another year or so and squeeze as much as I can out of my current rig (it's just the accountant in me). Is it possible to upgrade my current rig to run X Plane 11 at ~25 fps? Would swapping out the graphics card and RAM help? Is it worth it?
Your opinion is greatly appreciated!

That should run it fairly well. If it still isn't great, I would upgrade that CPU too.

Since X-Plane is 64 bit and optimized quite well, it uses all your RAM and uses your graphics card. Those upgrades will definetly improve X-Plane 11 performance when it's released. However, keep in mind that some people have been reporting issues with the beta on some machines, so even if your not getting great performance now, you might get much better performance when it's fully released. As far as if it's worth it, if your able to purchase it, I'd say go for it. Those extra 6 GBs of RAM and 7 GBs of VRAM will definitely increase performance.

Guys, thanks so much for your input! And Aidan, I'll go ahead and order the hardware and jump on X Plane 11 when it's officially released. Hopefully, the "slideshow" like performance was just a beta thing and is not entirely due to my system as you suggested! Thanks again, guys!

Thanks, Michael. I took a gander at their minimum requirements before downloading XP 11 Beta and was fairly disappointed when I launched XP and experienced a literal slide show (~ 5 fps). I probably should have clarified in my initial post that the main concern I have with my current system can be summarized in three letters: AMD.
As Aidan suggested, hopefully the slideshow I am experiencing is indicative of a buggy beta version and not weak hardware. I plan to upgrade the video card and RAM; however, I hope that my processor will not hinder performance. I guess I could always upgrade the processor to an AMD 8 core as Yisrael mentioned.

RAM and GPU should help quite a bit. If you can get at least 16GB of RAM and a 4GB GPU that would probably put you in a pretty good place. The CPU may need to be replaced with a newer AMD CPU, but the RAM and GPU are a good place to start the upgrade process. I have been seeing around the web that many are having issues with performance in the beta, so most likely it is something that can be ironed out.

Thanks for the tips, bud! I really appreciate the advice as I have zero experience with X Plane. I will let you guys know how it goes after the hardware is installed.

In X-Plane it's still more the CPU speed that counts than the number of cores. They might change that in the 11 lifetime cycle, but at the moment it's like that in 10 and 11.
So 4 cores running at 4Ghz will outperform 8 cores running at 3.5Ghz. And an Intel CPU with 3.5Ghz will pretty significantly outperform an AMD CPU running at the same speed. Not an Intel-Fanboy here, that's just the way it is in X-Plane...

I have been playing with the beta and I have high hopes for X-plane 11. I think once the bugs get worked out it will be the best home use sim on the market.

I have decided to simply upgrade my graphics card (not the CPU as you mentioned), enjoy FSX for a bit longer, and then upgrade to a new pc next year. If my existing pc will run X plane, then that is great. If it doesn't...oh well.

Yeah, I hope they get the bugs worked out soon. It has the potential to be a great sim!
