I have no idea if it has been brought up before so I figured I write something. It's obvious no one can stay glued to the computer for a 10+hr flight. Wouldn't it be cool/nice that you could just log in DELTAVA.ORG on a desktop or on your phone and pause certain flights before reaching TOD or an approach? IDK, it just occurred to me since I plan my flights based on when I "think" Ill be back home and resume my approach or TOD. Just a thought. Regards from always sunny KSAN!

You'd be surprised how many flight reports I see where the aircraft autopilots in circles around the destination a dozen or more times before someone grabs the stick and lands it.
Some payware aircraft have a pause at TOD feature. I'm not sure spending time to update ACARS to pause at TOD so that our pilots don't need to be "piloting" is going to accomplish our goals as a VA. I also understand we all don't have 11 hours to sit in front of a screen every time we fly. We do allow time acceleration and ACARS limits this to 4x maximum. Its a necessary part of my rare but extremely long flights.
I once did fly KLAS to KATL, the longest 727 flight, all online with no time acceleration. It was quite a time investment but very rewarding and several ARTCCs were up throughout my journey. It did take a good 3 hours though but manually navigating victor airways and VOR's kept me on my toes for the trip. This sort of flight is a rareity for me though. Plus, to complicate things further, the 727 engines draw from dedicated tanks but the middle tank is much larger. So, on longer flights, you have to manage fuel valves until you get the same amount in each tank at some point.

There is a program called iwillbeback. It works on all aircraft as far as the FSX, but I'm not sure if it will work for the FS9. Here is the link: https://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=24428
All you have to do is to type the NM before event and then check Pause box then press OK.

The is another simple add-on gauge called "BeThere!" that I i have used on a couple of the long range airplanes. Simple to install and works off of LAT/LON.

As a non long hauler (currently maxed at cat 3) the longest flight I can do is ~8 hours. That's not long enough to go to sleep and let it fly. Something the 777 et al people have the luxury of doing with 12-16h flights. When I did these long yet short flights, I would start at a time of day when I will be around. Say start the flight, set it off and go do my errands. Come back few hours later and just pretend my copilot was there. With a proper FMS and no failures set, there really isn't anything to do. And if your system crashes, you being there won't help anyway...
On shorter flights I will typically go chill and look at the acars map for anomalies or when I need to return to the gaming rig. For really short flights, say under 700nm I would typically remain at the gaming system. I try to minimize system usage and shifting in and out of the sim while in flight as I've had crashes caused by such activities. So literally fsx ties up my computer completely forcing me to use alternates (like making this post) while a flight is in progress.
Running fspassengers in full manual mode also requires more attention and makes starring at the screen much easier, but I've had it cause crashes so I stopped using it for the time being (uiautomation.dll menu crash thing) as I try to identify the exact trigger condition. So I would definitely recommend that addon as it does give you a lot to do and makes you sit there... makes a 1200-1500nm flight quite pleasant. Longer, not sure it helps that much.

Personally, I would like an ACARS iOS app just to monitor my flights... Anyone have any experience?

Hmmm.....An ACARS app would be really neat. Although, if I'm doing a longer flight or really have to step away or out of the house a sec, looking at ACARS on my phone through Chrome works just as fine.

I always laugh when monitoring Vatsim traffic via the FSRadar app (in the Google Play store) on my tablet. Seeing some poor bloke (99.9% of the time they are on a long-haul) who overflew his destination and is now way out over the Atlantic or Pacific. I like watching their altitude decay when they run out of fuel while they sleep merrily away.

Thank you very much guys! I actually downloaded iwillbeback and it works great. I like that you don't have to install anything and it just works. In a way I like this better since you can just set it and forget it. Haha! Thanks again!
