I'm super excited about building my new computer. It's mainly a video editing and visual effects workstation, but it will also be amazing for flight simulation. The parts are currently shipping, so I figured I'd give some insight into why I bought the main ones so I could possibly help someone else who needs a new computer.
CPU: Ryzen 7 1700x
I kind of took a gamble on this one, because Ryzen is a fairly new platform and may have some bugs still waiting to be worked out. It seemed like a good choice from a video editing perspective because unlike the other CPU I was looking at (i7-7700k), it has 8 physical cores. I hope that this will also be helpful in the future as game developers learn to use more cores efficiently.
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060 6Gb
This choice seemed fairly simple to me. It has 1280 CUDA cores which can be used for rendering out video. It also can crush flight simulation level games such as X-Plane 11 and hopefully future sims that can take advantage of it. It's also not too overkill for my needs. I definitely don't need a GTX 1080 or Titan X.
RAM: Crucial - Ballistix Sport LT 32GB DDR4-2400 This one only mattered to me as I need it for video editing. For most gaming situations, 16Gb is perfectly adequate.
Everything else
Motherboard - Just looking for good I/O and stable bios with some expandability (MSI - B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4)
Storage - Boot SSD for OS and some space for programs (Sandisk - SSD PLUS 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive), and for main storage (Western Digital - Red 4TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive) because it has a lot of space and very good reliability for high workloads.
CPU Cooler - (CRYORIG - H7 49.0 CFM) Heard it's a great cooler, very quiet, keeps an overclocked chip at good temps
Case - (Cooler Master - MasterBox 5 (Black) ATX Mid Tower) Modular and expandable
Power Supply - (EVGA - SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified) Never cheap out on the power supply! It can ruin your entire PC if it fails, and that would be really bad. Just spend the little extra to get something reputable.
PCPartPicker link here in case you want to see all the current prices. Remember to take shipping and tax into consideration.
https://pcpartpicker.com/user/YWeal15/saved/fLdQ7P
I will definitely update this thread with any useful information I get as this build progresses.
Hope this helped someone!
Yisrael

What screen resolution are you running? I've got 2560x1440 and when I was upgrading my GPU I figured I'd spend the extra $100 and go to a 1070. Even in P3D nV Inspector says it's only running at around 50% whereas my old 760Ti was pegged at 100.
Cheers!

Here is my rig i recently upgraded for relatively inexpensively
Core i3 7350K ($145 on jet.com with 15% new member discount) - 4.2 Ghz
asrock mobo $48 on newegg
DDR4 RAM 2 x 4GB sticks $28 each
Case with 2 fans $25
600W power supply from best buy for $26 on sale
cooler master evo 212 heat sink/fan $26 on newegg
I already had an SSD, 2GB video card, monitor, 500GB HDD for storage/backup, and my flight yokes stuff.
I have zero issues. i can run orbx, all sliders to the right. Its the first time I have been able to run FSX SE in all its glory. I can even run 28 frames with Aerosoft Manhattan going and I'm vfr.
I read a lot up on how FSX doesn't take advantage of more than 1 core so why get an 8 core machine? My theory paid off. For about $320 out of pocket and using some of my existing pieces, I was able to get the rig I finally wanted after all these years!

Using an older screen right now, so only 1600 x 900. I will get a 1440p or 4K panel eventually (when my budget expands).
Andrew, I definitely agree that FSX doesn't need a ton of cores or a fancy GPU to run well. The only reason I'm getting such a high end setup is because I need it for video production. Otherwise 8 cores is probably a waste of money.

FSX is very dependent on CPU clock over number of cores. High clock will give the advantage in FSX. That said, I run an i7 4770k overclocked to 4.0GHZ.

The AMD Ryzen 7 1700x can overclock to 4.0-4.2 Ghz. I think it will be good with FSX. I'll definitely keep everyone posted on how things go though.

If you can get to 4Ghz or more, you should be good cpu wise.

SSD plus is not bad but I have literally destroyed (or should have) Samsung 840 and the newer 850 EVOs and they keep begging for more. For anything intensive with lots of data movement id suggest the 850 over the sandisk.
price difference isn't that much but the proven long term ability to take abuse like a magnetic drive is worthwhile.
as for case just go full tower (full size of said coolermaster is what I've had for 3 years). I can never go back to anything smaller and have been converting all the usable systems as sales go up. its so nice having the space to actually put things inside.

So I put it all together yesterday, and everything seems to be working great. Haven't OC'ed the CPU yet or installed FSX, but it all looks good so far. I'm not really using the Sandisk SSD for anything intensive. Just the OS and some select programs that I want to run faster.

Same. Doing a little upgrade to my rig this weekend too, going to start upgrading for P3D v4.
