I am considering my next computer. My current processor is an Intel I-5 at 2.9 G. IT STRUGGLES WITH FPS WITH THE FS Labs A320. What is a better processor for FSX. The Intel I-7 4 core, or the Intel I-3 2 core at 4.2 G. I use the computer exclusively for flight swimming.

This is the machine I use for flight sims and all around use

ACARS reports average FPS between 47.6 and 64.4, I have seen the steam overlay FPS showing higher than that doing bush flying in general aviation aircraft. I have my setting pretty high for flight sim but, I don't have a lot of ORBX, payware aircraft or other addons.... Also, I have not overclocked it myself so it is pretty stock. One thing I did do is add a 2nd 1tb that is used for flight sims do to the addons that can eat up some hard drive space when I do start adding them.

Hey Chris;
Sorry to bug with this, but I don`t think you can overclock a i7 7700. The only way you can overclock an intel, is when your have a K at the end of the model; such as, i7 7700K.

It's the 8700k now. I wish it weren't in such short supply.

My question is this. Since FSX only uses a single core, would I get better performance out of a 2 core Intel I3 with 4.2G, rather than a 4core Intel I-7 at the same speed?

It would be about the same speed. If you're also running other programs at the same time though, more cores is better to distribute the load.

Doesn't look like it. You can get one off Amazon for like $15 though.

Greg, one thing to consider though about multi-core processors is that even for FSX, some of the new payware like the Q400 and the FSDT Charlotte make use of multi cores within FSX.
