I know there's been a few threads about this, and the last official response I remember seeing was that someone elsewhere spiked the price of where DVA used to get its schedule data, resulting in a cessation of automatic updates. I'm certainly not trying to be pushy, but rather just wondering if there's another way to freely get a new stream of data flowing. I was digging around online and found that Delta publishes a rather enormous PDF file with their worldwide schedule. I was able to access it on the public side of their webpage (without needing to log in or anything) after some digging around, so (I'm no expert in this subject) it seems like... public document => free use? The time range, as of this writing, is 01OCT19-15NOV19 -- fairly short, so (having no evidence to the contrary) my assumption is that this publication gets updated periodically.
I've included a screenshot of one of the pages. Putting my old IT hat on and skimming through the publication, it's already very well formatted in tabular form: it seems like it wouldn't be crazy difficult to parse. I certainly can't promise anything-- my workload is unfortunately starting to overflow my desk lately --but, if I (or another volunteer) could develop something to parse this file... how much of an undertaking would it be to get it consumed and enable (semi-)automatic schedule updates again? Comparing the data I'm looking at against a quick Flight Schedule Search in the DVA system for matching airport pairs (I understand there's probably a lot more data stored behind the scenes), it seems like the data in this PDF has everything that is displayed on our route search. It may take a little bit of craftiness to develop an index key scheme and, depending on the current database schema, perhaps some additional post-processing to pre-process the leg/trip information if that isn't already handled by a grouping query. But, this seems very doable.
Please forgive me if I'm getting a little excited over nothing. I'm sure other people have seen the same data I'm looking at. Could this be a solution to our schedule data problem, or is there more to it that further complicates the matter?

Tyler,
So great job and great find on this. The only problem I see is going through the entire document or documents. The problem is that there are a lot of world wide airports that Delta Airlines flies to on a daily basis. Reading through the document could take great deal of time to read through and then decipher how to implement it into our schedule and then update that frequently as if this document is even updated.
I think you have a great idea and I don’t want to bash on your idea, it’s just I am not sure if it would be feasible to sort through this for every airport Delta serves. This would take a lot of time sort through. Unless we have an algorithm or something that can sort it automatically?
I think it is a great idea though. I didn’t even know documents such as this existed and better yet public knowledge. So great find.
I’d love to see our schedule get updated regularly as before but I’m not sure how we can do that?

Joe:
Sorry, I should have explained better. By no means do I expect anyone to manually read through this: the PDF is over 1000 pages! If someone tried to do this manually, I think it'd probably take just about enough time to allow my yet-unborn grandkids to retire. When I said "parse" I meant write a script/program/webpage/etc to read and interpret the file much faster than a human could. The idea was that a script could read the file when a new one is produced, extract all of the useful information from the PDF and transfer it into DVA's schedule database

Good find Tyler! I like the way you are thinking. I found the schedule on the Delta site and downloaded all 1,046 pages of it. Very extensive schedule. I tried converting the schedule using Adobe Professional and it kept crashing. I split the schedule into 105 sections and tried to convert a section to a CVS file formated in a way we use to import the schedule. It did convert the smaller section but it was not in a usable format. It made 44 columns of data, we only use 11 columns. The data is not consistently placed in columns throughout the schedule either. It would be too labor-intensive to clean up the data. I will dig a little deeper into this concept.

Yes. Per my original post, I was hoping that the short validity period meant more frequent updates... which, for our purposes, would be a good thing.

You're welcome Joe.... and I don't mind assisting as well, you know.
The question then becomes, what's the data to pull out from the .CSV file?
I see Kevin has an excel file there..having worked for another airline before I am somewhat familiar.... however, it would suspect it's going to be based on whatever system DVA is using for compilation.

if it is in excel, it should be able to be saved as a .csv file in several formats MSDOS, etc. from excel. I am sure Luke can chime on this with some direction. Regardless, great find. It would be nice that the schedule is correct to RW dispatch . ..

My plan was to make a script that would read the PDF and extract the info into a SQL database that Luke could hopefully import from. I hadn't gotten far enough to choose a language yet. I didn't want to get too into the weeds until hearing back from Like/whomever else would potentially receive and process the data.
While Excel does a decent job of converting to a table that could be theoretically exported to CSV, it seems like there would still need to be a significant amount of manual post-processing to clean up the CSV after Excel finished. Maybe it's possible, though. If we can get it done easily, repeatedly and reliably with Excel, that'd be awesome!

Luke,
Thank you for the response to this.
Tyler,
I believe either Kevin Lundy, Jim Rose, Soonho Lee or myself can get it uploaded to the schedule. This is a great find. my hats off to you good sir!
I have been trying to convert it csv format but haven’t been successful.

Thanks I really hope my assumption is correct and this document gets continually updated. If I can write something to automate parsing of the document, it could be as simple as scheduling a job to run automatically and our scheduling data woes could be over with. For awhile, at least. I'm optimistic.

Tyler, I like the optimistic vision you have. So I think we can convert this to a csv file and we can get it imported. I know Kevin is working on this project as the number 1 priority.
Thank you

I'd be happy to write a PowerShell script to parse the data and create a usable file for importing into the DVA schedule.

Hey y’all,
So we are currently working on a lot of new and interesting things and number one is working on updating the schedule. We have a lot of data in this awesome find, thank you Tyler. The data needs to be sifted through and added and updated. Hopefully we can get it added here in the near future.

This is going to be a good learning exercise. I've made some progress. I saved the .PDF as text (thanks to FoxIt Reader). I've massaged the file and removed the extraneous lines (ones without flight data).
Now I'm working on pulling the required data from each line. Getting the Flight Number is easy. Next is the EQType...stay tuned
The data is much more spread out than how it appears below...

I've got the equipment issue solved. Just some fine tuning.
I'll send you the raw .CSV (several flights for each flight number) plus another .CSV with unique flight numbers (one flight per flight number)

Is it solved using the existing mappings in the database? That's why I mentioned I'd prefer IATA or ICAO codes and I'll take it from there on the import. My week is a little crazy but hopefully I can take a peek at it over the next few days.
Cheers!

This sounds very encouraging. I always use the RW published flights, routes, gate info, etc. . . . always an "as real as it gets" simmer . . .

I've accessed the link that Perez provided and it's still coming up with the same .PDF that was only good until 11.15.19.
I was hoping that they would replace it with an updated schedule.
I'm anxious to run a new schedule through the PowerShell script I wrote that parsed the .TXT dump of the .PDF and saved it to a .CSV that Luke is looking over.

Scott,
I've been referencing this link since early 2017 to fly RW international legs. They do update it, but in my experience, they update it a month after the new one is made valid (In this case, the new one was valid Nov. 16, so it should be on that link sometime around Dec. 16).
That's where the problem will come into this big project; the DVA schedule, if updated the DAY the RW scheudle is available for our viewing, will always be at least one month behind.

I'm pretty sure I can import multiple "layers" of schedule from different sources over each other. What's stopping me now is the incredibly poor quality of the permanent schedule data. I'm trying to clean up what's there, but I'm really starting to suspect/fear that we need to go to the current SkyTeam schedule and have the Ops team revalidate all of the historic flights and determine what to put back. It's been added in fits and starts over the years without a coherent plan or vision, and the data quality is poor and there are some interesting choices having been made (Saudia Historical?)
Cheers!
