Rebuilding a computer every couple of years isn't a bad idea as it gets cluttered up with bloat and generally bad DNA. With all of the effort that goes into a rebuild, it's a good time to buy or build a new computer too. In your case, a 10 year old computer, I would think it's time unless you're perfectly happy with it and feel it has a few more years left in it.
It's the age old question - how much money do you want to stick into a 10 year old computer vs. how much more time does that buy you and optimally can the new parts be used on a future new rig?
Motherboards and processors go hand in hand in terms of socket type and what processors the MB will support. The motherboard also dictates what type of memory and memory capacity is supported. The sure answer here is video card as they are an easy swap out and replacement, they generally add frame rate improvement, and they're going to be reusable on a future computer. If you were on FSX I'd say forget about the video card as it will buy you next to nothing in terms of performance. P3D is a different story and I think you'd get some mileage out of a video card upgrade.
If you want to run sliders at 100% on a 10 year old computer, personally I'd be throwing in the towel for new CPU/MB/RAM and just like that you're at a new rig.
