Looking at my pilot status and 737 Program, I see that the different aircraft classes are separated into 4 different Levels. The 737 Program is level 2, and it looks like I'm permitted to file flight reports for the Level 1 airframes as well. If I move up to the 757 program (Level 3) later on, will I still retain the ability to file flight reports for Levels 1 & 2 OR does each program have an approved aircraft set that comes along with it?

Hi Paul - When you change into a new program you get both the main rating and a number of additional ratings that go along with that particular program, and per the pilot's manual (where you can also find detailed information on the primary and secondary ratings for a program): "You do not lose any primary or secondary ratings you have earned by obtaining additional ratings or by switching programs." So feel free to move up to a higher stage but still keep flying the 737 or other Stage 2/1 aircraft when the feeling strikes!

I found some information that answers some of my question in pages 15 - 18 of the Pilot's Manual. Very detailed info regarding how the Stages work and how to move from one to the other, but not about retaining the ability to fly all previous Stages after you ascend.

Thanks Alex, I didn't see your post before I replied. I'll look more into each program and see the details. It's been over a year since I've looked at the Pilot's Manual but the more I'm reading the less questions I have. Thanks for the reply!

I'm blind apparently, I just saw that on the same pages I referenced, the 3rd column covers the various aircraft each Stage allows.

Hey Paul,

Glad you found the answers in the Pilot's Manual. That's what it is there for. wink

To sum up your question, you can fly any aircraft as long as you have the rating for the aircraft, meaning if you have the rating you are authorized to file flight reports for the airframe. In order to obtain additional ratings or move through the programs, you'll have to take and pass the First Officers Exam for the program and then request the equipment program checkride which are typically assigned within 24 hours. Once you pass that successfully you'll then earn the rating and authorization to file flight reports in the new ratings. smile
