Using FSX:SE
I have used a Hotas PS3 joystick ever since I joined up 7 years ago. Unfortunately, it has become partially inoperable. Both throttle and rudder functions are out of action. Other buttons on that section function OK.
I have never had any need to change anything. I have checked and rechecked all settings.
Both throttle and rudder are fully functioning when I am in the calibration section of the Settings - Control.
I found that the rudder function had been changed to auto.
I have had to resort to using auto rudder and the F1 to F4 keys for throttle, or use the mouse on the throttle levers, but that is not nearly as much fun.
Any advice to get me out of this would be highly appreciated.

If the devices work correctly in Windows calibration then I would check my FSX settings.
Cheers!

Thanks Luke.
I have checked all FSX settings and assigned all functions. When I tried to reassign rudder and throttle functions nothing happened. I wonder if I should reinstall FSX?
I found last night that the autorudder function went crazy. There was a heavy bias for the a/c to turn left which made it impossible to taxi in straight line.

Please describe what happened (or didn't). Did you delete your existing axis mappings for rudder and throttle, then attempt to create new ones?
Cheers!

After I lost the throttle and rudder functions I went in to reassign them. I found nothing there. They were both blank. I then tried to assign them. They were not accepted.

Quick update:
I tested my joystick on X-plane. Appeared to work perfectly. I have had X-plane for a few years but never really used it because I was disappointed with certain scenery details. Big mistake!
I will apply myself to gradually changing to X-plane whilst using FSX which I will reinstall, expecting for the throttle/rudder to go back to what it used to be.

So I understand, you saw no axis assigned to rudder/throttle? When you attempted to assign an axis, did FSX not see the joystick inputs? Or did it see them, and not save them? Was there an error message?
Cheers!

Apologies for not responding earlier Luke.
There were no error messages during the assignment.
I have since been able to recover my spare joystick. I thought I had it made! Unfortunately this did not achieve anything. Have to assume that it's a FSX problem. I will contact them.
Meanwhile I have assigned the rudder function to my PC's keyboard. I found this to be overly sensitive. I detuned the rudder function in all the a/c I currently use by 20%. That did the trick.
Only problem is that when you are very busy and hands-on during the landing phase you need a third hand. May have to engage my wife as a First Officer.

Contact who? The sim is 18 years old. You likely have a duplicate axis assignment, or you have assigned that joystick axis to something other than rudder or throttle.
Cheers

Sorry, it is not the very old FSX, it’s Steam. I had not been playing around with any of the settings. It just happened.
I really should get a divorce from FSX and move onto something else. Trouble is I don’t really want to because I am so comfortable. I would also have to get a lot planes. I may have to get more used to using keys. Never know, some day it may fix itself.
Thanks for your help.

I've found that many times when my old X52 acts up, or not as the case maybe, that unplugging the joystick and plugging it back in resets everything and it works correctly. I've even had to do this in flight a couple of times when the joystick or throttle quit responding although it's usually a rudder problem. Don't know if you tried this or not but it's worth a shot.

I normally unplug the joystick when I finish a flight. It first happened when I forgot to disconnect from the PC and it was left on all night. I have done this before without any problem. Even though the PC was shut down the power remains on. I don’t think the joystick is faulty.
What do I know?

HAPPY DAYS!!
you won't believe what has happened. Everything has come good and I wish I knew how it happened. Like I said earlier to Raymond "what do I know?"
When I started FSX this afternoon (my time) I found that my newly created use of the keyboard failed to operate the rudder. DISASTER. If I had any hair I would be pulling it out. So back to settings. Coud not make it happen. I also found that I only had elevator trim but not normal elevator operation.
I thought "that's it" and in desperation I started to make a move to Xplane. I found that the rudder toggle worked fine but I had trouble with other things.
I went back to FSX Steam and discovered that there were two buttons on the throttle handle, 8 and 9 or R2 and L2 that were not being used. Settings recognized them when I assigned them to the rudder functions. When I restarted FSX I found that 8 and 9 worked.
I accidentally touched the toggle switch. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the rudder move. To sum up, I now have two ways of operating the rudder and I shall leave it to your imagination which buttons I shall use. I don't even want to know how it happened. I am not game to look at settings. HAPPY DAYS and I think I will stay with STEAM for the time being.
