I have heard many times that a pilot has been banned because of his/her age. I would like to make a suggestion that in the joining form we add a place where the person joing must enter there age. And not let the person join if there age is not at or over 13. (and then tell them why they can't join of course)
I think this would reduce the hassle on the staff b/c then they would not have to deal with those kind of people beforehand
Just a thought

Dakota,
If you want Luke to consider developing it, I suggest you add it into the issue tracker so he can look at it It sounds like a good idea but, the main concept of age is "don't ask, don't tell" from my understanding.

yea, i seem to have forgotten about the issue tracker I must be half brain-dead or something LOL
Actually, i have seen some other VAs that ask your age. You cannot join if u are not at or above 13.

This is a question that Terry and I have discussed several times in the past. Before I go farther, let me emphasize that people have NEVER been "banned" from Delta or AFV based on their age.
With that said, the current legal framework we operate under (being a Georgia corporation with a physical presence in New Jersey) is US federal law pertaining to the collection of personal data from minors. Generally speaking, the law frowns on web sites collecting personal data from children under the age of 13 without the consent of their parents or guardians. This is why most virtual airlines prevent you from joining if you are 12 or under, and make you tick a box claiming you are 13 or over.
Personally, I think that's nonsense. COPA (the Childrens Online Protection Act) allows us to get basic personal information about our members under 13, provided that there is no age-identifying information there. All we ask is a name, an e-mail address and a basic, very vague location. Tht pretty much covers us under COPA. If we discover that a person is 12 or under, we are then forced to suspend membership until we get approval from a parent or guardian. In short, for under 12 it's a "don't ask, don't tell" kind of situation. We're forced to suspend until consent arrives because legally we cannot knowingly accept membership from under-13s without parental consent.
The reason we do so is that every 12-year-old I've ever seen will simply check the box and lie. Now under our current arrangement, if someone is "exposed" then no harm, no foul. We simply get the paperwork out of the way and we're done. Under the "I Certify I am 13 or over" arrangement where the member has lied in that box, what are we supposed to do? We're basically in a situation where we have forced someone to lie to join, and then we are forced to condone a lie in order to let the member remain. That's lousy.
This explains why we NEVER ask you your age, and we do not intend to start. You will also find that Delta Virtual and AFV's policies regarding child members is probably the most flexible and open-minded among all of our peers, while still remaining in compliance with COPA.
Cheers!

Well heres my say on it all
Good Lord im 13 and want to be a pilot when I get older. So for me it is just an oppertunity to "see sorta what its like." And for Dakota's comment about "those kind of people", were just like normal people were just younger. We can be just as good pilots as you all can. So yes, I do agree with having an age restriction but I STRONGLY disagree with the comment about "those kind of people."

Weston, this thread, as you can tell is from last year. We had some big problems with immaturity last summer.
