We really need to do something about pilots email being used as a primary way of communication. I would suggest a database based mail system that has some simple features in which pilots could have their own mail box. However you call it, this mail system would be for internal purposes only that way we don't use up server space with junk mail.
Any thoughts let me know, I would be happy to help (since I alreay have one written). The one I have written in php/mysql so let me know if you guys would like to use it or not I would happy to put it to good use.

You might want to put this in the issue tracker for Luke to look at it.

I don't think server space should be wasted to have a personal mail system for every pilot, regular email works fine IMHO.

Well it wouldn't have "email" capabilities.. It would be only for the use of our pilots. The object is to get less invasive to our users by using email. Not to mention that many of us who fly on a regular basis get a lot of mail from DVA. I just thought it would be cool if we didn't have to email it rather than keep it all on one site. Its not really an arguement really just a suggestion. Personally I don't really mind the email but I have this code laying around and just thought that maybe someone would like to use it.
Anyways I have to say I have only been around DVA for a few weeks now and I am really impressed. This is truely one of the greatest and most friendly VA's I have ever been with. Been very happy with it and as an Atlanta native I have to say the colors are well flown here at DVA.

I don't see anything wrong with email so far. This would just waste server space.
A good idea would be telling people to CHECK their inboxes regularily, and keep a VALID email account so everyone who needs to contact him/her can do so...

I see the point about adding a private-message system, but I know for me, email's better. I'm active on a LOT of different forums for my various interests, I'd say at least 15-20, and most have private messaging systems. I can only check the various forums every few days. But with email, I check it every day, multiple times a day. It's more convenient.
And David's right. All pilots here need to keep a current valid email address in their profile. You won't get spammed. Promise.

I think an email space for each pilot would be a waste of space. A messaging system sounds great, however people are very active in the cooler. There is also a "chat" function on ACARS. I really don't see the need in anything else.

I would have to agree that email works fine for most situations. You're able to customize how "visible" your email is and it's a sure (well almost sure) way of getting information when not regularly logging into the site.
That said I have a couple of issues. I've maintained the same valid email address since I joined DVA almost two years ago. Until recently I'd never had a problem getting emails from DVA members and staff. Recently, without planning to, I took a break from DVA for a while (mostly because computer frustrations made it too much of a hassle). My absence lasted just a bit too long and I was eventually marked inactive. The strange thing was, I never got the email warning me of my inactivity. I get all kinds of email from addresses under the dva domain, several of them quite obviously are generated automatically and/or sent in bulk, neither of which seem to worry my spam filter at all. I don't want to gripe over something small, but this seemed strange to me. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
If I had to mention one thing that does bother me about using email it is the automatic notifications. I realize we can elect to not receive these notifications, but I prefer to keep in the loop. This becomes frustrating when a flood of emails converges on my inbox in a single evening, not even all at once, but spread out over several hours. I do a lot of important communication over email so, when I hear that telltale sound alerting me I have new mail, I can't usually ignore it, even if I'm 95% sure that, for the 8th time tonight, it's an Online Event Update. (Unless there's some way I'm unaware of to get Outlook to play different sounds for different email accounts. That would solve my problem.) While this is not technically spamming, sometimes it feels like it when DVA emails outnumber all of my junk mail combined for that day. Is there any possible way, when there is going to be a litany of new online events or news items posted could they either come in a single email or all at once within a few minutes of each other? I think I could handle my computer sounding like a Vegas slot machine if it lasted only a few minutes. I'm not trying to sound crabby. I was just wondering if anything can be done about this. I'd really rather not exclude myself from these notices.

The ability to "chat" is included in ACARS. Also in the pilot center you can edit your profile to show your AOL IM or MSN Messenger contact name.
In other words, we have options available for pilots to find each other and chat in realtime...
