Im giving a lot of thought in joining the first course on the Flight Academy. Im just curious on how much time and when one has to dedicate this time to the course. Is it like captains and FO test that you get right away and have a certain time to finish them? or do you set your schedule with the instructor?
Im planning on joining...even though I have quite some hours now with online flying experience, I hear its quite worth it...
Any words of encouragement?
Cheers...

The PPL course in the Flight Academy is a combination of ground school and online flying instruction with CFI's. The time to complete the course is dependent upon student and instructor schedules. Obviously for efficiency reasons it is best to be prepared to work through the course without major gaps.
I am enrolled in the PPL course with my first lesson this evening. Like you, I am excited over the prospects of improving my aviation knowledge and piloting skills.

I joined as well after being here about a year. This is a great opportunity to learn from real world pilots about real world procedures. My first flight is tonight (Tues) with Jim Warner. I hope to some day get my real world PPL. These instructors have put in an unmeasureable amount of time not only in preparing these lessons but in implementing them. I can't wait and am truly appreciative of the time Scott, Andrew, George and Jim have put in and are willing to put in to make us all better pilots!

Pray you don't get Scott......He has a bobble head doll (very goofy looking) in the cockpit (I think it's in the likeness of Keech) and if the head starts to bobble then Scott will cut off the engines and test your "gliding" abilities.
All the instructors are great. You are going to learn so much. Don't expect to fly through it (pun intended). It'll take a couple of weeks but it's definitely worth it.

Isidoro,
We typically do lessons on weeknights around 9PM eastern time but we do have some flexibility there. Lessons typically last about an hour or two hours, depending on the student and the instructor's time availability.
It's self paced, and the point I'd like most to emphasis is that is it NOT like the typical program changes or ratings additions - the courses are all about live flight instruction. We have a PPL manual for the course and there is an exam, but it's really about teaching pilots how to fly. It's a prerequisite for the soon to open commercial course (it is nearly ready to go - we still have to finalize the CRJ checklist we are using, fix a couple of minor editing issues in the commercial manual, and then it's ready)
Pilots going into the PPL will need FS2004 (sorry, we don't use FS2002 or even FSX yet), voice and of course internet access, preferably high speed access so latency isn't an issue. Sign up and send a request for flight instruction and Jim Warner will get in touch with you and help you get going.

Hula Girl and Ted E Bear are not mine......They are owned by DK, but he will loan them out (for a price) to any student that feels that they need them. Ted E Bear is great to fly with as he is always smiling and approves everything you might do in the airplane. Hula Girl is there to help you judge your landings, climbs and descents. Since her head is mounted on a spring, she reacts about as fast as the VSI instrument.....You might need to recalibrate the spring before you fly with her, depends on who was flying with her on the last flight.
Take the course, we look forward to seeing you...

Derek: I plan to eventually. I'm gleaning all I can from the flight academy now but I hope to move further west near KFQD and start my real work PPL there. "All in good time my pretty....all in good time...."
BTW, I had my first lesson last night and it was great! I realized how little I really do know about piloting an aircraft.

Glad you had a good time and learned some stuff. This course has got to be experienced to be believed as to how much real world flying is modeled very well in FS2004. As I said last night, everything we learned about pitch, power, and trim as well as landing configurations, straight and level flying, turns, etc. are all transferrable to any plane you fly in FS2004 or in the real world. Have fun using your new skills when flying!

I hope I get to do the PPL Course some day. Right now I fly with my keyboard... landing can be a pain...but I manage. I hope to get a yoke and pedals sometime. But until then it I assume the instructors want me to have some kind of better control. But I can't wait to learn from these guys...

Hey Jimmy, ever thought about just getting an in-expensive yoke untill you can get the nice yoke and peddels? I now have a nice yoke and peddel set that I bought from avshop and it came with a headset but before then I just bought a simple joystick type from best-buy and it had a little throttle thing attached to it. It's a Logitech and cost me like 29 bucks.

The Flight Academy uses FS9 or FS2004 and FSNet/Copilot to put you and the instructor into the airplane at the same time. You need a headset and voice and an internet connection...dial up is too slow to allow the planes to work correctly. We do not use FSX or Vista at this time....You will have to fly on VATSIM on one of your x country flights....

Don't confuse FS Copilot with FSNet.
FS Copilot is a payware program by ABACUS software (review: http://www.avsim.com/pages/0299/copilot/co-pilot.htm)
FSNet is a program from www.gates.to, that allows 4 hours free use (roughly enough time to complete the PPL course), and then if you like it, you can purchase the base model for about 5-10 Bucks. The full package that lets you link up to 8 people costs a bit more.

FSX includes the ability for someone to fly in the right seat with full voice comms, but you're going to have to use their multiplayer interface, not VATSIM's. Microsoft's multiplayer requires a Gamespy account for anything over the internet. Very limiting in my view.
For those of you thinking about a RW PPL, get off your duff before it gets any pricier. When I got my PPL back in 2001 Cessna 172's were renting for $75/hr and instructors were $20/hr. I recently checked my FBO and they're up to $109/hr and $45/hr, respectively. Add another $15 - $20/hr if you want any sort of navigation avionics onboard (IFR GPS, etc). Ground school (which you should ace after DVA's PPL course) is $550. There are cheaper planes out there (Cessna 152's, etc) but unless you're a small person you'll have to pay CLOSE attention to your Weight & Balance sheet when you include the instructor. I weighed 235 back when I first started flying and the instructor's comment that we were OK "as long as the tanks weren't full" made me decide that maybe the 152 wasn't a good choice.
Flight schools sometimes offer package deals where you pay for it all up front. Here's the one's at the FBO I used. The hours listed are national averages for a PPL. Use this as a guide for total costs, but remember prices are always rising.
C-152 C-172/PA 28
35 hours of flight training with instructor $ 4,550.00 $ 5,390.00
20 hours of solo flight time $ 1,700.00 $ 2,180.00
20 hours of pre and post flight instructor briefing $ 900.00 $ 900.00
Enrollment Fee $ 35.00 $ 35.00
Less available block time discounts, if prepaid ($ 715.00) ($ 847.00)
TOTAL ESTIMATED COST $ 6,470.00 $ 7,658.00
{edit} I just LOVE forums that insist on deciding you didn't REALLY want those formatting spaces in your post. On each line, the first price is for a Cessna 152 and the second price is if you use a Cessna 172 or Piper Warrior II.

I remember when a 152 was $28 an hour and an IFR 172 Cutlass was $45 at CPS. Last time I checked about a year ago at KSAR a 172 was going for $65 an hour. By the time I get current again it'll probably be $90 an hour. But we're out in the sticks, so things tend to be a bit cheaper here.

Aye. The prices I quoted were for Dulles Aviation at KHEF - a regional airport in Virginia. They're just under the lip of the KIAD Class B and have an FAA-run control tower even though no commercial operations really operate out of there. I'm sure all that contributes to the cost of operations there (and therefore the cost of rentals).

Ian, it was his thread, why does it matter. I know about bring threads back for the dead, but come on if it is there own thread, who cares. He is supporting the Flight Acadamy. Plus it is in a channel that only has 309 total threads.

Wow Ian...bad day? I see nothing wrong with him speaking of this thread about his PPL. Its better than starting a new one and it updates everyone that was involved in the past. The Golden Rule might apply here.

Don't worry about it, Ian tends to have issues with old threads. Maybe one looked at him funny once?
