The ACARS Map is my favorite part of the DVA Site, I think we should have another DVA Map Resource. My Idea is to have at the bottom of the Log Book Page a button saying "Pilot Route Map" with a link over to a Google Map illustration of all routes within the log book. I don't think it needs to include flight progress, but having all city pairs point-to-point together on the map would be a useful tool, It could help to show gaps in route networks that help pilots to decide where their next flight will be. I already keep my own blank map of the US in my office and draw a new line for every flight completed and I compare it to the Sky Magazine map I smuggled off a Delta A/C.

Letting my IT project manager side speak... I think that'd be really cool but I'm afraid that it would take a really long time to render -- but, I certainly wouldn't put it past Luke's technical skills! With all of the Google/Ajax mash-ups out there, something that can at least plot the point A to point B "as the crow flies" routes may already exist (but plotting the exact "as flown" routes might be asking a lot since that'd be a huge amount of data). This would be pretty similar to the route maps you see in Sky Magazine. Anyhow, a cool idea.

With this same manner of thinking, you could create a map with all the routes flown by DVA pilots in a given day

Yeah, I agree that having point-to-point displays would keep it from overloading with data, I also filed a comment for this in the Help Desk...hope it becomes a reality.

I once wrote down the same suggestion in a new thread and then abandoned the idea as too difficult to put into practice.
If it can be done without too much trouble for our already hard working staff.. fantastic .. one more addition to the hundreds of advances Delta has over other VA's.

Did we think of this all on our own, or did we really steal it from another VA....
Several other VAs have long since had this map idea and use it so I just want to make sure we arent claiming rights to there ideas in this "hundreds of advances Delta has over other VAs"

No, we didn't think of this first, but it's a great idea. I doubt anyone owns the route map idea. However, sites like Great Circle Mapper are independant and possibly copyrited....but, they are out there to be used. What arrangement Flying Tigers uses with GCM, I don't know. It was just nice to have a visual graphic of all your past routes on a world map (city pairs w/ a line connecting them) and to see where you might want to go next.

What I do is use the google earth download from each flight in the logbook. You can change the colors on it so it stands out more and take away the position reports too so that you can see your route. Much easier than the great circle tool because you don't have to input all the information. I think there's a way on the DVA site to download ALL of your flights into a google earth .kmz file so you don't have to do them all one-by-one.

And I think, also, if you download each map BEFORE you fly the route it will just give you a straight line on the map.
