Josh,

Just as a reference point for you. Here is the rig I built earlier this year. Very pleased with the outcome as it relates to FSX and add-ons.

And my build from about 10 months ago inspired partially by Vic's (whether he knows it or not) smile
http://www.deltava.org/thread.do?id=0x1801b

FSX locked at 30 fps with high settings, no problem. FS9 also has amazing fps (but I don't use it anymore).

Trevor, I like your specs. I was just a month or two ahead of the release of the Sandy Bridge chips. Knowing what I know now, I probably would have waited and gone with the 2600 series. I believe I will incorporate that into my next build effort. Glad you are getting great performance.

i know you picked the AMD, probably for cost, but everything i have read says the intel chips i5 and i7 out perform the amd stuff for fs. maybe someone will correct me!

check this comparison of the 1100t with the i5 2500k

Yeah, the i5 2500k would be your best bet. I went with Sandy Bridge and couldn't be happier. A couple other points I would like to make:

-You will need a new motherboard for the new chip. Anything from ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte, or MSI will be good. Just make sure it is a P67 or Z68 socket board.

-That HDD is only 5400rpm and 2.5". Standard HDD's are 3.5" and 7200rpm. I'm not sure if you specifically wanted a 2.5" drive, but if you can, you should get a 3.5" instead, as they perform better than 2.5". The Western Digital Caviar blue/black series and Samsung Spinpoint F3 are all great. (NOTE: the prices of HDD's are super high right now, and i'm not quite sure why. It might be due to the Japanese tsunami last year, but I am not sure...)

-As Josh already said, a better GPU would serve you well. The 550ti or 560ti are what I would recommend.

-Do you plan on buying an operating system? If you do, Windows 7 is the way to go.

-I would suggest an aftermarket CPU cooler. The CPU comes with one, but it is el cheapo, and you would get a lot af mileage from a 3rd party cooler. Have a look at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065 I have one, and it is AMAZING for $30.

-Always buy electronics from Newegg, they're the best. biggrin

Good luck with the build! If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Joe

Alright Joe, updated my HD to 3.5" 7200 by western digital. What does "bare drive" mean? Also, updated the mobo to ASUS P8Z68 ATX.

Matt - a "bare drive" means that there is literally nothing on it. You will have to load the operating system as Joe pointed out. You may want to figure in an OEM copy of W7 into your calculations (unless you have a copy already).

Do I need to buy a component for Ethernet connection or does the mobo handle that?

Ethernet (gigabit lan) should be on your mobo along with your USB ports, audio, and kybd/mouse ports. Good luck on your build!

Vic, and others. What is the deal with Windows 7 and OEM copies. I know they are tied to the motherboard originally installed on, ie no transfer. This is great, what if I need to RMA my mobo, get a different board back. am I out of luck?

Dan - the discussion of "bare" referred to the hard drive which Matt was asking about. I was making mention that he would need an original copy of W7 (or whatever operating system he chooses - could be XP or Vista. etc) to install to the HDD. The MOBO really has nothing to to with it and if it goes bad return it as an RMA - nothing lost. You still have your hard drive, operating system, etc. IN the event you get a bad hard drive (well, you still have an original version "OEM" of the operating system) to load onto the new drive when it arrives. Naturally there are some other considerations such as doing a completely new install if you change components in this fashion as you will want the operating system to correctly write to your registry.

yep, i am familiar with oem drives. my real question was with oem versions of windows 7.

regarding windows 7 oem, and trying to save a buck.

Not to focus on "OEM" I was just adding that you will need a licensed version of W7...you can pick one up on-line, at Staples, and Office Depot - wherever. Point was - it does not matter if you need to return any of the components. If you have a copy of the OS you can reload onto anything. smile

If you have not already decided i suggest a 955 black edition and a better graphics card if you can't afford i5 2500K with a decent graphics card. I went with the AMD 8120 and a evga gtx 560 2gig and i am having huge problems right now and can't solve it but i am working on it right now. Until i fix it i can't suggest the 8120 to compete with the i5, but i know the 955 works good for fsx i have seen quite a few people with a 955 or 965 in there fsx builds.
