07/03/2003 737 Top 3 Ryan Watkins
Over the past several weeks I have been working on a new addition to the 737 aircraft program - the "Top 3". This program is designed to assist not only myself in the daily administrative duties of keeping our program running smoothly, but all of the pilots as well. The members of this group were hand selected based upon the completion of an exhaustive review of flight records, written testing scores, airline participation as well as knowledge and dedication. While this group remains unofficial as far as the airline is concered, their experience and expertise make them exceptionally qualified mentors to junior pilots who may be starting fresh as well as those who have been around for a while and still have some questions. Without further adieu, please allow me to introduce the 737 Top 3 - Captains David Shartzer, James Brickell and Michael Polojac.

06/12/2003 Web Site Back Online Luke Kolin
We suffered a router failure at 1633 EDT on June 7th. The router is the only part of our web farm that does not have a redundant backup system, and our primary site has been offline since then.

We recently purchased several Flowpoint 144 IDSL routers, and the web site is back online. No data has been lost, and as DNS changes propagate the site should be available to you. I'd like to thank Dennis Cherney for his good work providing backup DNS services and status updates on his site.

I'd like to apologise on behalf of Delta Virtual Airlines for this service interruption. This is unfortunately part of the risk we run by being a hobbyist-run site, as opposed to being run at a commercial hosting provider. It's certainly NOT the way I wanted to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of our web site (which opened 6/11/01).

However, we're up and running - with full redundancy in ALL of our systems, now. I'm looking forward to not doing this for another two years.

We will be discussing mainly online flight topics. I want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to learn how to fly online and boost the number of online PiREPs filed as well as increase support for our airline at VATSIM-hosted events, such as the groupflight coming up *hint, hint*. The meeting will take place on Yahoo! Messenger on Saturday, 8 Jun 03. That's this coming Saturday at 1700 hours (5:00pm) PDT which is 2000 hours (8:00pm) EDT. I am going to create a chatroom within the messenger chat program. To find us, click on "Chat" at the top of the messenger program and then click on the "Computers and Internet" category. To the right in the rooms name listing click on the tab that says User Rooms at the top and look for "DVA737Session". The meeting is aimed at 737 pilots but is certainly open to anyone whiching to attend. If you plan to attend, please send me a message to pilot_738@yahoo.co.uk letting me know you're attending so I can get an idea of how many people we'll be hosting. Awais will be working with Tyrone Weston to ensure that the program reaches its full complement of over 100 pilots quickly.

Michael Banks has been "Mr. MD-11" since joining DVA, apart from a brief affair with the 747-100. It is only fitting that the MD-11's biggest fan take over this program, that of DVA's largest and most distinguished aircraft.

04/13/2003 Board of Directors Luke Kolin
As Delta Virtual Airlines has grown, our management has expanded from being a 2-person shop into almost a dozen. As we focus on longer-term issues affecting more community members, we've discovered a need for a group of individuals who can provide guidance on strategic issues facing their airline.

Accordingly, we will be having a Board of Directors that will work with Dennis, Mark and myself to provide candid advice, feedback and suggestions. Our aim is to have a Board of 7 to 9 members, chosen a variety of ways. Our existing senior staff will be ex-officio members, and we will be including a number of experienced, committed pilots.

I am pleased to announce that Robert Sucarato, Larry Hart and Geoffrey Smith have accepted nominations to the Board. The Board will be getting together soon to develop the logistics for adding a 7th member, a pilot representative. While no specifics have been worked out, there appears to be a consensus forming for a wide-ranging, democratic choice.

Please join me in congratulating Larry, Robert and Geoffrey on their appointments.

04/06/2003 Management Update Luke Kolin
I regret to announce that Conrad Roberts will be stepping down from his role as President of Delta Virtual Airlines, due to a combination of health and family issues. As one of the CEOs of the two airlines that make up the present-day DVA, Conrad's efforts were critical in creating the airline you now enjoy. Please join me in wishing Conrad the best in his future endeavours.

Going forward, we will be putting together a group of individuals to collectively move Delta Virtual Airlines forward. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let us know on the Water Cooler.

03/20/2003 Water Cooler War Postings Dennis Cherney
This will serve as the one and only notice about postings concerning the current War in Iraq. Those who wish to express or share news about the war are welcome. However, we will under no circumstances tolerate any flaming of another person, race, country, and other related topics. Because of incidents in the past, DVA will be instituting a Zero Tolerance policy with regards to this topic. Anyone who is caught starting or participating in any fight of words in the water cooler will be suspended for a minimum of 14 days. Even if you are a person on the receiving end of this type of banned conversation you will be suspended if you chose to respond in kind. Let the staff handle any issues that may arise. Again, please feel free to discuss issues that are not directed in a negative fashion against another person or group. If you have to question whether your comments would be taken as a personal attack then they probably would be and should refrain from making such posts. In the past people have become disgusted with the discussions that turn negative, now I don't want to be the heavy in the issue but I do not want to lose any pilots over someone?s inability to control their thoughts and opinions. We really appreciate the cooperation of all members of Delta Virtual and with the support of everyone we can get through this difficult time.
03/15/2003 Boston Flyin Signups Open Mark McCauley
We have opened the Boston Flyin Signups, this will be a partner event with UPSVAC. The Flyin will be on March 29, 2003 between 5-7pm EST. More info can be found at www.deltava.us/events.
03/15/2003 Flight Video Uploading Luke Kolin
I'm very pleased to announce the addition to the Testing Center of a Flight Video review section. This will allow pilots to upload their check flight videos to our web site, instead of hunting down a Chief Pilot via e-mail. You will be able to track the entire review process, and we'll have a record of which check flights you've successfully completed. This feature is limited to videos of 4MB or less in size, so please ensure you only record the final few minutes of your flight, from the Outer Marker to the end of the rollout.
03/12/2003 Mike Evans promoted to Senior Captain L-1011 Ariel Griotti
L-1011 Captain Mike Evans has earned the rank of Senior Captain. With over 60 flights in just this aircraft, and hundreds of hours in other aircraft, he also is influential at DVA and participatory in any way he can. Please congratulate Mike on his promotion.

03/02/2003 Water Cooler Usage Conrad Roberts
I've seen a few of these bashing and problematic threads lately. Delta Virtual Airlines as you know has a ZERO Tollerence Policy for bad behavior and you can read what we don't and do allow at our FORUM GUIDELINES on the menu to the left. From now on, any individual starting or involved in a flame war will be warned, 2nd and 3rd offenses will end up in either a Suspension or Expulsion from the water cooler and/or Delta Virtual Airlines (Depending on offense). When I say the word offense, I'm basiclly pointing out the threads where people are involved in feuds and wars, not minor threads where everyone is happy or the ocasional off-topic postings.. Most of us get along, but there are the few that have issues, lets keep this number as low as possible to keep the friendly enviroment that the water cooler has today. Thanks for your attention
